For over 100 years, International Women’s Day has been celebrated or observed to advance women’s equality; labour rights and suffrage in the early 1900s to economic parity today. In 1975 the UN officially sanctioned the day, and began annual themes in 1996. This year’s theme, “Be Bold for Change” seems especially timely. 2017 has already seen some of the largest rallies for and by women with an estimated 5 million marching on January 21st as part of the worldwide Women’s March. The rallies were a response to the election of Donald Trump (and his perceived sexism) but also the continuing inequality in earnings, lack of funding to women’s services, and staggering statistics on domestic violence with one woman killed on average every week in Australia by her current or former partner.
Inspired Adventures stands with all those campaigning and fundraising for respect and equality for women. Join us on March 8 by celebrating women’s contributions and taking action for these goals.
How to get involved
- Get along to an event. There are events all around Australia on 8 March, from luncheons, fun runs, breakfasts, and forums. Check out the IWD event page to find an event near you.
- Host your own! The UN Women National Committee Australia, one of the key proponents of IWD in Australia, are encouraging everyone to host their own IWD brekkie.
- Become a mentor, or find a mentor. Women’s mentorship groups exist all around Australia and are a great way for women to support each other with career advancement. We love the idea of Mentor Walks – check them out!
- Join an adventure. Inspired Adventures partners with charities doing incredible work for women and girls. You can Trek for Rights with UN Women Australia, Trek for Respect with White Ribbon, Run for Girls with Plan, fundraise for breast cancer research and support with BCNA, NBCF, McGrath, or Hunter Breast Cancer. Check out our calendar and search for the perfect adventure to join to turn your support into action.
What’s the greatest lesson a women should learn?
That since day one, she’s already had everything she needs inside herself.
It’s the world that convinced her she did not.
