Ronald McDonald House Charities Victoria & Tasmania
The Ronald McDonald Houses at Hobart, Monash, North Fitzroy and Parkville provide a home-away-from-home for families with seriously ill children who are required to travel long distances to receive medical treatment for their child. While we primarily cater for families who live in rural and remote areas within Victoria and Tasmania, we also welcome families from across Australia and overseas.
The four houses serve all major paediatric hospitals in Melbourne and Hobart. Being so close to these hospitals, Ronald McDonald Houses give sick children the best gift of all – their family. A family’s love is powerful medicine, and research shows that, with loved ones close by, children heal faster and cope better. For this reason, the whole family unit is welcome to stay, including parents and siblings, for as long as they need. Some families are with us for just one night, others for much longer; our longest stay was close to three years.
The Houses provide a supportive and caring environment to ease day-to-day burdens, stress and financial worries, so families can focus on the needs of their child. We provide full bed and bath linen, private bedrooms of varying sizes, shared kitchen, dining and lounge areas, laundry, play rooms, computer access and outdoor areas. Families are encouraged to cook their own meals and do their own laundry in order to keep life as normal as possible. A couple of nights a week, they are also able to enjoy a fresh, healthy meal cooked by community and corporate volunteers.
The Houses are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. There are 16 houses nationwide and on any given night, there are over 400 families staying at a Ronald McDonald House in Australia.
No one should have to choose between paying the bills and caring for their sick child. From a shoulder to cry on, to a kiss goodnight, when you’re stuck in hospital, having family around can make all the difference.
