The Challenge

Human rights are the fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to every single one of us. Yet, every day across the world, people face suffering and indignity.

Join the Amnesty Alps2Ocean Cycle and, with every kilometre you cover, you’ll help build a world based on kindness, justice and aroha. As part of this incredible adventure, you’ll raise vital funds to power human rights research, advocacy and campaigns across Aotearoa that have global impact.

From the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean, over six days you’ll cycle the scenic centre of the South Island between towering mountains, beside great lakes, through rolling farmland, across expansive plains and into quaint villages.

Best of all, your pedal power will help protect human dignity and defend human rights.

“An unforgettable experience with a group of fellow travellers that combined some hard graft with astonishing scenery.”

Adrian Field, 2022

“One of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

James Toomey, 2018

The Difference You'll Make

Amnesty International is the voice of freedom for thousands of people across the world who are oppressed, persecuted, tortured or awaiting execution. But it’s only with your continued support that they can continue their vital work.

As part of the Amnesty Alps2Ocean Cycle, you’ll help defend everyone’s right to freedom and dignity.

The funds you raise will make change happen. Change in the way our justice system works in Aotearoa New Zealand. Change for people caught in crisis zones like Ukraine or Afghanistan. Change for the courageous people whose lives are at risk from defending human rights. Change for people around the world to control what happens to their bodies.

Real change takes time and resources. Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand is doing everything it can to protect human dignity and defend human rights. But they need your help. Together, we can shine a light in the darkness.

Christchurch to Tekapo

Our adventure begins! Please meet your team and guides in Central Christchurch at 8:00am. Our Alps to Ocean adventure begins with a drive across the picturesque Canterbury Plains. After refreshments in the country town of Geraldine, we continue through rolling farmland to Fairlie, where we stop for lunch. The scenic journey over Burkes Pass is a fitting introduction to the famous Mackenzie Country, and it’s not long before we spot the azure waters of Lake Tekapo. Hopping on our bikes, we ease into our ride along peaceful hydro canal paths lined with epic panoramas. Making our way to Tekapo Village, we wander along the lakeside to see the Church of the Good Shepherd, then soak away our first-day aches in Tekapo Springs outdoor hot pools or embark on a night-sky tour.
