20-22 February 2023
3 day trip, 2 day challenge
Twin-share in 3-star lodge
Trek New Zealand’s Tongariro Crossing to help the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand create a society where all people flourish.
In February 2023, you’re invited to journey across the dramatic, volcanic landscape of Tongariro Crossing, along one of the world’s premier one-day walking tracks. Immersed in natural beauty and the rich history of Aotearoa’s Māori culture, as part of the MHFNZ Moonlight Trek, you’ll follow winding paths to Red Crater, in time to watch the sunrise over the Central Plateau and the eerily beautiful lands beyond.
With the silhouettes of Mounts Ngāuruhoe, Ruapehu and Tongariro your constant companions, you’ll traverse a Mars-like landscape dotted with spectacular magma formations under a star-studded sky. You’ll trek between steaming vents and alpine springs, beside emerald lakes and around moonscape basins as ongoing rumblings from the ground below remind you that the lifeblood of this amazing land still flows underfoot.
Best of all, with every step you take, you’ll raise vital funds for the Mental Health Foundation to provide resources and tools to help people support themselves and other during uncertain times.
The Difference You'll Make
Did you know 1 in 5 New Zealanders will experience mental health challenges in their lifetime? Or that New Zealand has one of the highest youth suicide rates in the world?
The Mental Health Foundation works tirelessly to create a society free from discrimination, where all people enjoy positive mental health and wellbeing. But we need your help.
As part of the MHFNZ Moonlight Trek, you’ll raise vital funds to help us reach more people with the support they need, now and into the future. It’ll enable us to continue our incredible work nationwide – supporting parents, families, communities and workplaces by giving them the resources and techniques they need to support themselves and people around them during uncertain times.
- $40 distributes 132 physical mental health resources to schools, workplaces, communities and healthcare centres, ready for those who need them
- $80 enables the Mental Health Foundation staff to respond to 6 enquiries from people experiencing mental health issues
- $150 supplies 48 sets of digital support and guidance resources, enabling 32 individuals or organisations to support a friend or colleague through mental distress
Every step you take as part of this incredible adventure brings us one step closer to an Aotearoa in which everyone can enjoy good mental health and wellbeing, and build and sustain wellbeing.

Rotorua to Tongariro National Park
Are you ready for an epic adventure? This afternoon, you’ll be collected from central Rotorua or the Rotorua Airport before meeting the team and guides. We then set off on a scenic drive along the eastern shores of Lake Taupō to Tongariro National Park. With clear views all the way to Tongariro volcanic massif, this is one drive you won’t want to sleep through. Upon arrival, we enjoy afternoon tea beside the famous Huka Falls in Taupō. We then take on the two-hour loop walk around Lake Rotopounamu, at the foot of Mount Pihanga. In the evening, there’s ample time to settle into our accommodation before gathering at a local pub for a team welcome dinner. It’s then off to bed in preparation for our (very) early start in the morning!
