This is an opportunity to join like-minded people, united by the desire to raise money for type 1 diabetes research, to trek the Great Wall together. On this adventure, you will raise funds for JDRF and help its mission to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat type 1 diabetes and its complications.
The Hike for Health brings together supporters from various Australian and New Zealand health and medical research organisations for an adventure trek to the Great Wall of China. You’ll be part of an incredible team, raising awareness and funds for an organisation close to your heart. You’ll stand united, as a team, atop the Great Wall, knowing the difference you’ve made.
On the Hike for Health, you’ll travel through history to the very heart of China’s ancient culture.
Starting in Beijing, you’ll quickly swap the hustle and bustle of the city for the majesty of the Great Wall. You will challenge yourself like never before as you trek on remote and unrestored paths, between mountains, through local villages and across rolling farmlands. With the support of our expert guides, you’ll explore the many facets of the Great Wall, deciphering the ancient stories and poems etched into its watchtowers, every brick seeming to tell a story of war and adventure.
Immerse yourself in the ancient history of this World Wonder, explore Beijing’s Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven, and experience the poignancy of Tiananmen Square.
Best of all, you will be raising funds to assist some incredible health and medical research charities as we work towards better health for all Kiwis and Australians.
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) can affect anyone at any age or stage. There is no way to prevent it, and there is currently no cure. Living with T1D involves the need to inject insulin multiple times a day or receive insulin via a pump worn on the body. People with T1D need to check their blood glucose levels several times a day by painful finger pricks to avoid dangerous high or low blood glucose episodes.
Every dollar raised on this incredible adventure will go towards more of the best and most promising T1D research, focusing on the areas of cure, prevention and treatment. Each research project has the potential to change the lives of the 120,000 Australians living with T1D.
$1,000 can fund one month of testing and glucose monitoring equipment for one person enrolled in a clinical trial. Clinical trials are the final step in getting new treatments and therapies for T1D to the people who need them. Clinical research is different to lab-based research because it involves humans. Clinical trials test potential new treatments in volunteers, in safe, carefully monitored studies, before they’re made accessible to the wider population.
