Join the ShelterBox Kokoda Trek 2020 for an epic challenge trekking the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.
The Kokoda Track was the scene of bitter fighting when the Australian Army fought to defend Port Moresby from advancing Japanese forces in 1942. Today, walking that same track has become an iconic pilgrimage for those wanting to honour the ANZAC spirit. The ShelterBox Kokoda Challenge will take place over April 2020 as a special commemoration of the historic events.
Regarded as one of the world’s greatest treks, the Kokoda Track links the south and north coast of Papua New Guinea across 96 kilometres of rocky mountain terrain, tropical rainforest and remote villages.
On this adventure, you’ll lace up your boots to trek alongside ShelterBox Australia and New Zealand supporters to raise funds that will help supply disaster relief shelters to people in need. By day, you’ll trek Papua New Guinea’s tropical rainforest, unforgiving in terrain and inspiring in beauty. As nightfall descends, you will stay in isolated camps, swapping stories with local Koiari and Orokaiva people and falling asleep to the nocturnal sounds of the jungle. Though the Track is challenging, you’ll be rewarded with an unmatched sense of accomplishment and the knowledge that YOU have made a huge difference to Shelterbox Australia, New Zealand, and the families that rely on their support in the wake of natural disaster.
“This was the most difficult challenge I have ever participated in but I created memories for life!” – Johanna, 2018 ShelterBox Nepal Trek participant
Help us reach the communities most in need.
By going the extra mile and trekking Kokoda for ShelterBox Australia and New Zealand, you’re helping our teams go even further. The funds you raise can provide shelter from the elements, clean water to prevent illness, solar light for safety, blankets and ground sheets for protection as well as tools to repair homes. Together we can help rebuild communities after disaster strikes.
Disasters can strike anywhere, at any time. At ShelterBox Australia and New Zealand, we can respond quickly but in order to do so, we must maintain a high level of stock and continuous aid. To achieve this, we need access to funds before a disaster strikes and be able to replenish stocks immediately afterwards. All funds raised will go into our ‘ShelterBox Solution’ disaster relief fund. This fund allows us to be flexible and respond quickly, in the most appropriate manner.
