Step Into History

Step into the footsteps of emperors, warriors, and ancient builders as you embark on an unforgettable journey along one of the world’s most iconic landmarks. The Great Wall of China is a living, breathing piece of history that winds across mountains, valleys, and time itself. Over nine incredible days, you’ll take on this unique fundraising challenge, pushing yourself physically and mentally, while immersing yourself in the rich culture, cuisine, and history of China.

The Trekking Experience

This five-day adventure challenge is graded 3 out of 5, offering the perfect balance of difficulty and reward. You’ll spend four to six hours trekking each day, navigating sections of the Wall that range from fully restored to completely wild. Some parts feel untouched for centuries, with narrow pathways and trees sprouting between ancient stones. Other stretches are meticulously maintained, offering a glimpse into the Wall’s majestic past. From steep climbs and watchtower ascents to serene forest trails and rugged staircases, every step brings something new.

This isn’t just a tourist trail, it’s a raw, immersive experience. On some days, you’ll cross paths with other visitors; on others, you’ll feel as though you have the Wall entirely to yourself. The scenery shifts constantly, and each section presents its own challenges and triumphs. You’ll also pass through peaceful rural villages nestled beneath dramatic mountain ranges, where local life carries on quietly and traditions remain strong.

Explore Beijing’s Cultural Wonders

Your Great Wall journey begins and ends in Beijing, where you’ll explore some of China’s most iconic landmarks, offering the perfect cultural context to frame your adventure.

You’ll visit Tiananmen Square, one of the largest public squares in the world and a symbol of modern China. Surrounded by monumental buildings, it has been the site of many historic events and offers a powerful introduction to the country’s evolving identity. From there, you’ll step into the awe-inspiring Forbidden City, once the exclusive domain of China’s emperors. With its vast courtyards, golden rooftops, and ornately decorated halls, this UNESCO World Heritage site reveals the opulence and strict order of dynastic life spanning over five centuries.

You’ll also have the opportunity to explore the tranquil beauty of the Summer Palace. This imperial retreat features serene lakes, arched bridges, and winding covered walkways surrounded by lush gardens. It’s a peaceful contrast to the rugged challenge of the Wall, and a perfect place to reflect.

Next is the Temple of Heaven, a masterpiece of Ming architecture where emperors once performed sacred rituals to ensure good harvests. The circular temple, surrounded by centuries-old cypress trees and calm parklands, offers a harmonious and spiritual close to your journey.

By exploring these historic sites at the beginning and end of your adventure, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of China’s past and present, complementing the physical challenge of the Wall with moments of awe, reflection, and cultural connection.

Training Tips to Prepare

To fully enjoy the challenge, we recommend beginning your training three to four months before departure. Focus on building endurance through hill walks, stair climbs, and long hikes. Try to replicate trekking conditions by training with a loaded daypack, and consider using trekking poles to help with balance and reduce knee strain on the steep and uneven stone steps.

What to Pack for the Wall

The weather can shift from cool mornings to warm, sunny afternoons, so layering is essential. Your hiking boots should be broken in and supportive, and waterproof outerwear is a must for unexpected weather changes. Your daypack should be comfortable and large enough to carry your essentials.

Quick essentials:

  • Lightweight, moisture-wicking layers
  • Waterproof jacket and pants
  • Trekking poles for stability
  • A wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen
  • Your favourite snacks, especially if you have dietary restrictions
Staying Connected & Navigating China

Most Western apps, including Google, Instagram, and Facebook, are blocked on Chinese WiFi. To stay connected, consider downloading a VPN before departure or using a global eSIM like Airalo to access apps via mobile data. WeChat is essential in China, not just for messaging but also for payments, food orders, and transport. English isn’t widely spoken outside major cities, so download an offline translator app like Google Translate to help navigate everyday conversations.
