How challenging is the marathon?

The full marathon is challenging due to the sandy conditions, climate swings, and isolation, but it’s designed for both runners and determined walkers. With proper training, especially long runs or walks on trails, sand, and uneven ground, you can absolutely achieve it. Many participants say it’s the most rewarding marathon they’ve ever completed, with Uluru and Kata Tjuta as the backdrop making every step worthwhile.

How do I train for the marathon?

We will provide you with basic information on how to prepare for your marathon when you register. We recommend that you consult your GP and a personal trainer to develop a training plan that will prepare you for the challenge.

Because the Outback Marathon is run on sandy, uneven terrain, the earlier you start preparing, the better. Begin by gradually building your endurance through long runs or run–walk sessions, increasing distance and time each week. Aim to comfortably cover 30–35km in training before race day to ensure your body is ready for the challenge.

To prepare for the unique conditions, try to train on trails, grass, or sand whenever possible to strengthen your legs and improve stability. Complement your running with strength and core exercises (such as squats, lunges, and planks) to build stamina and reduce risk of injury.

Do I need to have travel insurance?

Travel insurance is highly recommended for domestic adventures to cover cancellation, hospital, emergency evacuation and lost luggage. We recommend purchasing your policy as soon as possible. It is up to you to ensure you have fully comprehensive travel insurance and you will need to share these details with our team before departure.
