The Difference You'll Make

Cherish

Each year in Australia, more than 6,700 women are diagnosed with gynaecological cancer. Almost a third of these women will not survive their disease.

We urgently need to improve the odds of surviving gynaecological cancer, and the most effective way is through groundbreaking research. Our dedicated teams are ready to make a difference. However, they need your support.

Embark on an 80 km trek through the breathtaking landscapes of Bhutan, a journey that will not only challenge you but also contribute to life-saving medical research. Your efforts will help fund critical studies aimed at improving early detection, diagnosis, and treatment, ultimately enhancing survival rates and quality of life for women battling gynaecological cancer.

As you hike along the stunning Paa Chu River Valley, surrounded by lush blue pine and rhododendron forests, you'll also discover the rich cultural heritage and living traditions of Bhutan. This is more than just a trek; it's an opportunity to make a real difference.

Trip notes

Upon arrival in Paro, we’ll drive to Ta Dzong (Watch Tower), which was converted to the National Museum in 1969 by the third king. We’ll then visit Paro Rinpung Dzong, one of the finest examples of Bhutanese architecture which serves as the Paro district head office as well as a monastic community. If we’re feeling energetic, then we will walk down to Paa chu, cross over the cantilever bridge and cross to where our driver will be waiting. After that, we’ll stroll around in Paro and prepare for our big day tomorrow by turning in early.

Accommodation: 3-star hotel

Meals: D

After breakfast, we’ll drive from Paro to Shana, where we’ll meet our trekking crew and begin our long trek! Today’s trail ascends through the Paa Chu river valley and beautiful blue pine and rhododendron forests. We’ll stop for lunch after we cross Thangthang zam (bridge) and then continue to follow the bank until we reach a junction of a trail which is marked by Stupa, one leading to Sio Yaktsa and the other leading to Sio Thangthangka Campsite. After walking just past the junction, we’ll reach our campsite where we’ll stop for the night. From here we can see north where views from Mt Jomolhari can be seen from the top of the valley.

Accommodation: Camping

Trekking distance: 22km

Camp altitude: 3,575m

Meals: B L D

This morning we’ll start trekking on a trail that passes through a small border army check post. Here, the valley begins to widen and we leave the forest behind. We’ll see views of the snow-capped peaks, high mountain ridges, yaks and their herders along the path that leads us to Jangothang campsite. After having lunch in an open meadow, we’ll continue on until we reach camp, located in a beautiful grassy meadow beneath a ruined fortress at the base of Mount Jomolhari.

Accommodation: Camping

Trekking distance: 19km

Camp altitude: 4,040m

Meals: B L D

Today will be an acclimatisation day in Jangothang. There will be plenty of day hikes we can complete that offer great views of lakes and snow capped mountains such as Jomohari and Jichu Drake. We’ll also have the chance to spot some blue sheep on the upper slopes of the valley if we’re lucky.

Accommodation: Camping

Meals: B L D

We’ll make our way from Jangothang to Soi Yaktsa today, where the trail leads to a settlement in the valley and drops to the Paro Chhu. Along the way we’ll pass the lake of Tshophu and climb up the steep path to Bhonte La Pass (4,890m), which is the highest point of this trek. Upon reaching the Dhumzo Chhu river, we’ll trek downstream and pass some houses of Soi Yaktsa (Dhumzo) and arrive at our camp soon after.

Accommodation: Camping

Trekking distance: 16km

Camp altitude: 3,800m

Meals: B L D

The trail we are trekking today first descends before we cross a bridge and start to climb up. We’ll head towards the Tagyung La walk through the forest, which takes us up to some prayer flags and a beautiful view of the Sio Yaktsa Valley and surrounding mountains. We’ll have a steep but steady climb ahead of us as we trek to Yagyung La. The pass has several cairns wrapped in prayer flags and on both sides of the trail, we have views of Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, Tsherim Gang and in the distance, Kanchenjunga (8,586m) - the third highest mountain in the world.

Accommodation: Camping

Trekking distance: 11km

Camp altitude: 4,180m

Meals: B L D

This morning we’ll begin with a short climb from camp to Thomphu La pass. The trek from here on is arguably one of the best parts of the trek as we are high above the valleys and have endless views of the beautiful scenery. We’ll eventually reach a steep descent down to the military helipad next to the Bhutan Army camp and from here, we don’t have long to go until the army check post where our trek will end. We’ll meet our driver and vehicle here and drive to Thimphu to check into our hotel and relax for the evening.

Accommodation: 3-star hotel

Trekking distance: 13km

Meals: B L D

After breakfast this morning, we’ll vist the National Memorial Chorten, which was built by Her majesty Ashi Phuntsho Choden in memory of her late son, His majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. We’ll then drive to Kuenselphodrang to see the Buddha Dordenma Statue, which is one of the biggest sitting Buddha in the world, measuring 51m. After lunch, we’ll visit the Folk and Heritage Museums, a fascinating testimony of Bhutan’s living traditions. From here, we’ll visit Takin Preserve where we’ll have the chance to see Takin, the national animal of Bhutan. Towards the evening, we’ll visit Tashicho Dzong, a beautiful fortress that houses most of the Government offices and King’s Throne room. We’ll then drive from here to Paro where we will stay overnight.

Accommodation: 3-star hotel

Meals: B L D

We wake this morning and complete a short trek to Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest. This is one of the most recognisable sites in Bhutan, built precariously on a hillside cliff and sitting 3,120m above sea level. To reach it, we'll follow a trail decorated with colourful prayer flags, which was done to protect travellers from evil spirits. Once we reach the top of this sacred site, we’ll see the breathtaking views it offers and take our time here to appreciate it all.

Accommodation: 3-star hotel

Trekking distance: 6km

We will provide you with information on how to prepare for your adventure when you register. In addition, we recommend that you consult your GP and a personal trainer to develop a training plan that will prepare you for the challenge.

As part of your training, we recommend making use of your free time to complete several day hikes. You should aim to be able to walk in hilly terrain for 6-8 hours comfortably and get up and do it again the next day.

It is sensible to start training as early as possible before you go on your trek.

Accommodation on this adventure is twin-share in 3 star hotels, lodges and guesthouses. You can expect all the usual amenities at the hotels, such as en-suite bathrooms, hot water, and basic toiletries. If you fail to raise the minimum fundraising target by this time, we will review the situation on a case-by-case basis.

I’m travelling with a friend, can we fundraise together?

Absolutely! Fundraising with a friend is a great idea. Just remember the fundraising target is per person, so you will each need to meet the minimum fundraising goal to participate. We know you can do it.
