The Difference You'll Make

deadly science logo

Across Australia, many First Nations communities face limited access to quality science, technology, engineering and months (STEM) resources, teachers, and educational opportunities, widening the gap in academic achievement. DeadlyScience is changing this narrative, by equipping First Nations students with the tools and opportunities they need to excel in STEM.

By joining us on the Larapinta Trek, you’ll directly support programs that provide essential resources like books, telescopes, robotics kits, and access to STEM education and and inspiring mentors. These resources help spark curiosity, and empower First Nations youth to become the scientists, engineers, and innovators of tomorrow.

Every dollar raised will help DeadlyScience work toward creating STEM equity for First Nations youth and improve educational outcomes in remote communities across Australia.

Trekking the Larapinta Trail—through landscapes rich in Dreaming stories of the Western Arrernte people—is the perfect backdrop to reflect on the power of education and the importance of equity. More than a trekking challenge, this is a journey that’ll inspire walkers and supporters alike. Together we can walk toward a future of opportunity, empowerment, and change for First Nations youth.

Trip notes

Upon arrival in Alice Springs, make your own way to the hotel. If you arrive earlier during the day, you might like to enjoy the sights and sounds of the bustling heart of the Red Centre before leaving it all behind for the desolate outback. Browse Aboriginal artworks at Central Australia’s best art galleries. This is also a good time to ensure you have all the articles needed for your Larapinta Trail walk.

We meet at 2:00pm in the Olive Pink Botanic Garden to discuss the coming days with our guide. After the briefing, we will be greeted by Traditional Owners and ‘Welcomed to the Country’ in an authentic, conversational way. Afterwards, head back to your Alice Springs accommodation, retiring early for the night in preparation for the big journey ahead.
Accommodation: 4-star hotel

Meals: None

We gather with our guides and team bright and early this morning before heading off into the wilderness where the West MacDonnell Ranges are rich in natural wonders and traditional culture. Our first walk is a 14km ‘leg stretch’ commencing from the outskirts of Alice Springs where we can see some beautiful views, particularly at Euro Ridge.

Once we reach Wallaby Gap, we will be transferred to our remote campsite in the MacDonnell Ranges National Park. If time permits, we will visit one of the stunning natural waterholes for a refreshing swim along the way. The true experience really begins as we rest in a region synonymous with the Dreamtime (Alcheringa) of the Western Arrernte Aboriginal people as we enjoy a Kungkas Can Cook Tasting Platter for pre-dinner nibbles.
Accommodation: Camping

Trekking distance: 14km

Today we traverse the low-lying regions surrounding Ormiston Gorge, gradually working our way upward into the back reaches of the Finke River. This area is steeped in traditional folklore, with several important sites being viewed, including ‘Yapulpa’, which is part of the Carpet Snake Dreaming legend, and the Emu and Kangaroo Man Dreaming. If time permits, we will visit one of the stunning natural waterholes for a refreshing swim. Tonight, relax at our beautiful campsite as the sun sets and the colours of the night desert erupt into million-star accommodation.
Accommodation: Camping

Trekking distance: 15km

We'll wake up early this morning to begin trekking at 3am as we challenge the 8km climb to the peak of Mount Sonder. It's an experience you'll never forget! The vision of the sunrise and the 360° view will leave you speechless – it is a truly unforgettable achievement. Afterward, we'll enjoy a well-deserved cooked Aussie breakfast at camp. We can spend the afternoon at our own leisure at camp or by taking a dip at Ormiston Gorge before enjoying the evening under the stars of the Milky Way in our beautiful remote campsite.
Accommodation: Camping

Trekking distance: 16km

Meals: B L D

Regarded by many as the ‘primo’ small walk of the Larapinta Trail, the Ormiston Pound Walk is full of wow factor, wildlife and flora, and a grand finale to our walk. A location inspirational to Albert Namatjira, sensational viewings of the Chewing’s Range and Mount Giles – the entry into the Gorge will leave us dumbfounded. After our last picnic lunch at Ormiston Gorge, we will pack and break camp for regrettably the last time and begin our journey back to normality - hot showers and life as you know it awaits!

Tonight, after a well-deserved shower, we will have a celebratory dinner at one of Alice’s Outback Restaurants, where we can reminisce about the last days and share some banter over a refreshing ale or cool drink.
Accommodation: 4-star hotel

Trekking distance: 9km

Meals: B L D

This morning, we bid farewell to Alice Springs, the Red Centre, and our Larapinta adventure. You will be filled with the memories and moments that have made this adventure one you will never forget. Please make your own way to the airport for your flight home.

How challenging is this adventure?

This adventure is ranked 3/5. While no extensive trekking experience is required prior to registering, our adventures are specifically designed for people who are relatively fit and willing to train. The Larapinta trek is a physical challenge, and the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the experience.

You will be well supported on the adventure, with the guides and your team all cheering you on. You are free to move at your own pace and we will take frequent breaks.

How many people will be on my adventure?

We believe small group travel is better for the planet, and better for you. Our adventures average between 10 - 20 participants, connected by their commitment to the greater good.

Can I join an Inspired Adventure on my own?

Of course, most people do! Throughout your adventure journey, we will connect you with your fellow adventurers so you can get to know each other before you hit the road.

What is the general age range of participants?

The minimum age for this adventure is 18, however younger ages are considered on application. We have had participants aged 16–84+ take part in our challenges, all united by their sense of philanthropy and adventure.

What is the food like?

Breakfast is generally a choice of cereals/muesli, toast cooked on the campfire, porridge, fruit, coffee and tea. Lunch is typically served en route during trekking days. Your guide will lay out food buffet style and you can make your own wraps and sandwiches using gourmet meats and beans, delicious condiments and cheese and fresh vegetables. By night, your tastebuds will be treated to traditional Australian outback campfire cookery, with a diversity of dishes ranging from steak and salad, jacket potatoes and barbecues to risotto, pasta and stir frys.

I have dietary requirements, will I be catered for?

Of course, we will happily arrange for any dietary requirements you’ve noted during booking to be catered for. Please advise your local guide on Day 1 as well. You will be fed very well while you’re on the adventure, but if you have a very specific dietary requirement or severe allergies, often it’s best to pack some extra things as back-up.

Who is Inspired Adventures?

How do I train for this adventure?

We will provide you with information on how to prepare for your adventure when you register. In addition, we recommend that you consult your GP and a personal trainer to develop a training plan that will prepare you for the challenge.

As part of your training, we recommend making use of your free time to complete full day hikes and ideally a hike over several days. You should aim to be able to walk for 6-8 hours and get up to do it again the following day comfortably.

It is sensible to start training as early as possible before you go on your trek.

Do I need to carry my luggage on trekking days?

You will need to carry a day pack with personal items such as water, snacks, medications and spare clothing. The rest of your luggage will stay at your accommodation.

What is the accommodation like?

Accommodation on this adventure is twin-share at a 4 star hotel before and after the trek. While trekking, accommodation is at one of the ground operator's comfortable campsites.

Will I be sharing accommodation?

Accommodation on this adventure is based on twin-share. You will be paired with a teammate of the same gender and, whenever possible, age group. Single rooms at the hotel are available at an additional cost and subject to availability.

I’m travelling with a friend, can we stay together?

Absolutely! If you’re travelling with a friend, please make note of this and we will pair you together.

How do I fundraise?

You will have regular support from the Inspired Adventures fundraising team, who will help you make a fundraising plan to meet your target. Alongside personalised coaching, we will also send you lots of ideas and resources on how to fundraise. What happens if I don’t meet my fundraising target?

It’s normal to worry you won’t meet your fundraising target, but we know you can do it. In fact, with the support of Inspired Adventures, almost everyone goes on to raise far more than they imagined.

By registering for the adventure, you agree to raise the minimum fundraising amount specified. Like you, we are looking to make a significant impact for our charity partners, so the goal is for each person to have met their fundraising target before departure. If you fail to raise the minimum fundraising target by this time, we will review the situation on a case-by-case basis.

I’m travelling with a friend, can we fundraise together?

Absolutely! Fundraising with a friend is a great idea. Just remember the fundraising target is per person, so you will each need to meet the minimum fundraising goal to participate. We know you can do it.
