Trip notes

Merhaba! Welcome to Turkey! Upon arrival in Istanbul, you will make your own way to the hotel. If you arrive in Istanbul early today, there’s plenty to keep you busy. Why not go for a stroll and enjoy some traditional Turkish coffee or tea? You might want to visit some of Istanbul’s most iconic sights, such as the Hagia Sophia Mosque, Topkapi Palace or Grand Bazaar. Your trip will officially kick off with a welcome meeting this evening where you’ll meet your tour leader and fellow travellers in the hotel lobby before being briefed on the adventures that lie ahead. You will then enjoy a welcome dinner together

Meals: D

Today is Remembrance Day. Your breakfast box will be delivered to your room, as we will depart early for an unforgettable Gallipoli pilgrimage. The journey from Istanbul to Eceabat will be approximately 6 hours, and we expect to reach this special region at midday. On this Guided Gallipoli tour, you will visit the battlefields, explore historical sites and memorials, and reflect on the sacrifices made by soldiers. The journey provides a profound opportunity for reflection and remembrance, fostering a deep connection to the ANZAC spirit and the shared history between Australia, New Zealand, and Turkey. One of the most significant sites visited during the pilgrimage is the Anzac Cove itself, where the landing took place. We will also explore other locations like Lone Pine, Chunuk Bair, and the Nek, which were key battlefields during the campaign. These sites often evoke a sense of somberness and reflection as visitors witness the rugged landscape that witnessed intense fighting and loss of life. Ariburnu & Beach Cemetery overlook the Aegean Sea, and you can walk through the cemetery and observe the headstones, which bear the names, ranks, and regiments of the fallen soldiers. The cemetery’s serene and picturesque coastal location adds to the atmosphere of solemnity and reverence. We will then take the ferry across to Canakkale, where we’ll be spending the night.

After breakfast, we head back to Istanbul for our afternoon flight to Antalya. This beautiful, ancient city is perched atop cliffs that rise dramatically from the sea below. Enjoy a free evening to explore the sights before retiring for the night. Our trekking adventure begins tomorrow!

You’ll wake with excitement as we have our first hike of the trip planned for today. In the morning, we’ll make our way to the starting point of our first hike – Alacasu. A nice and easy introduction to the terrain, today’s hike will take just one to two hours, and will finish in Phaselis. These are beautiful, well-preserved ruins where you’ll be able to wander through the ancient, crumbling street, theatre, and baths each protected by the shade of surrounding leafy pine trees. In the afternoon, we’ll take another stroll around famous rocky mountainside above Cirali village – Yanartaş. You’ll have a chance to explore the place of eternal flames dancing on the side of the Fire Mountain. These flames were used in ancient times by sailors to navigate their way round the coast of Lycia, and even before that time, athletes used to light their torches with what was believed to be a sacred flame and run down to Olympos city. After today’s walks, you’ll have some time to relax and get ready for tomorrow’s adventures.

Trekking time: 3.5-4 hours

Fuel up on breakfast today and then lace up your walking shoes in preparation for your hike through Olympos and the surrounds. With plenty to see and explore along the way, today’s trek will be broken up into sections. The first section of the trail will lead you directly from your guesthouse to Camburnu. You’ll walk by a medieval tower and rock-climbing route before reaching an intriguing cave that descends into the sea below. From here, we’ll walk back to reach a lovely beach, break for lunch and, if the weather permits, take a refreshing dip in the lapping water. After some time to relax and soak up the scenery, you’ll embark on the next section of your trek to Olympos. This place will take your breath away – an ancient city, built presumably in the 4th century BC; once ruled by leaders of the past it’s now only ruled by the wild trees and greenery that surround it. From here, you’ll hike to Maden Bay and Cirali beach to complete your walk for the day before heading back to your accommodation to relax, unwind and stretch your muscles.

After a hearty breakfast this morning, you’ll embark on the longest trekking day of our Lycian adventure. We’ll walk from Olympos to Adrasan – one of the most scenic trails of the Lycian Way. You can expect to cross through the Musa (Olympos) Mountain and wind through the lush greenery and pine trees, perhaps with glimpses of the turquoise beaches below. After combating steep hills (both up and down) along the path, you’ll be rewarded with magical vistas and a delightful stop for a picnic lunch (at your own expense) along the way. You’ll finish today’s big trek in the seaside oasis of Adrasan. Now, it’s time to put your feet up and breath in the sweet ocean air – you deserve it!

Wake up for a relaxed day of recovery today – after yesterday’s epic trek, it’s time to take things back a notch. After a leisurely breakfast to begin the day, we’ll take a short drive to the starting point of a relaxed hike to the close by Gelidonya Lighthouse. Standing proudly above the Mediterranean Sea, the lighthouse was built in 1934. With captivating sights that extend across the sea below and islands dotted in the distance, you’ll have some time to rest and fill your camera roll before we take the same path back to our vehicle. This afternoon is for cultural experiences – we’ll visit the ancient city of Myra, the Museum of Lycian Civilizations and the ancient city of Simena. Plus, your local leader will take you to a special spot to tuck into lunch (at your own expense) at a famously tasty seafood restaurant in Finike – enjoy!

Today is another fun day filled with the same sense of adventure and excitement you’ve now surely come to expect on this trip. We’ll start off with a walk to Aperlai Ancient City. Formerly, Aperlai was significant trading city – now there is little that remains to this once thriving seaside acropolis. You’ll marvel at the crumbling city walls, stone gate that still stands proudly today and the remains of two Roman baths amongst the ruins. After some time here, we’ll retire to lunch at a local restaurant and take the opportunity to snap some photos for the memory bank. After lunch, we will trace our way back to Simena for afternoon of shopping, or relaxing at the sea side (or both!).

Trekking time: 4 hours

Meals: B

After breakfast today, we’ll hit the trails for the final full day of our trekking adventure through Turkey. We’ll begin with a walk to Delikkemer – a magnificent early Roman aqueduct. Then, you’ll enjoy lunch at the local village of Sidyma before exploring Sidyma Ancient City which lies on the southern slope of Mount Cragus. In the afternoon, you’ll enjoy a leisurely downhill walk, watching as the sun sets over the Mediterranean Sea and finishing your final walk of the trip at a beautiful turquoise beach, aglow under the sunset skies. Tuck into dinner with your newfound travel buddies and group leader this evening and toast to all that you’ve seen and all that you’ve achieved in the last week.

After one final breakfast together, we’ll depart for Fethiye this morning. You can expect a scenic drive with plenty of stops along the way to soak in the last few moments of our trip and briefly explore places like Kayakoy and Oludeniz. Our Lycian trekking adventure comes to an end on arrival in Fethiye in the early afternoon today. You can be dropped to the airport or the city centre. If you are flying out on this day, please make sure your flight departure is after 4pm.

How do I train for this adventure?

We will provide you with basic information on how to prepare for your adventure when you register. We recommend that you consult your GP and a personal trainer to develop a training plan that will prepare you for the challenge. It is sensible to start training as early as possible before you go on your trek. As part of your training, we recommend making use of your weekends to complete a full day hike and if possible, an overnight hike. You should aim to walk in hilly terrain for 6-8 hours and get up to do it again the following day comfortably. Conventional exercise routines which build strength, fitness and stamina, such as aerobics and light weight training can be beneficial, particularly if your fitness level is less than ideal.

What is the accommodation like?

You will be hosted in a combination of Turkish hotels and guesthouses in most destinations. These locally-owned hotels are chosen for their location, character, cleanliness and comfort. We will also stay in a traditional Turkish village guesthouse for a unique insight into local life.

Will I be sharing accommodation?

Accommodation on this adventure is based on twin share. When in twin share, you will be paired with a teammate(s) of the same gender and, whenever possible, age group.  A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement excludes days in the guesthouse where you will be in shared accommodation and is subject to availability.

I have dietary requirements, will I be catered for?

Of course, we will do our best to arrange for any dietary requirements you’ve noted during booking to be catered for. Please note in the rural parts of this itinerary, there may be limited choices for those with dietary requirements.

Will I have mobile phone reception?

If you have worldwide coverage, you can bring your own mobile phone and use it to make domestic or international calls. Please check with your mobile service provider prior to departure regarding international roaming and associated costs. Alternatively, you may wish to purchase a local SIM card. Please ensure your phone is unlocked prior to departure. Mobile phone reception will be limited during the trek, but generally fine in the cities. There will be free Wi-Fi available at the hotels.

Yes, you will have access to electricity and the ability to recharge items daily.

Like you, we are looking to make a significant impact for our charity partners, so the goal is for each person to have met their fundraising target before departure. If you fail to raise the minimum fundraising target by this time, we will review the situation on a case-by-case basis.

I’m travelling with a friend, can we fundraise together?

Absolutely! Fundraising with a friend is a great idea. Just remember the fundraising target is per person, so you will each need to meet the minimum fundraising goal to participate. We know you can do it.

Will the funds raised go directly to Shake it up

Yes, all of your fundraising will go directly to Legacy. Only the travel costs are payable to Inspired.

For more information, please visit www.inspiredadventures.com.au/travel-insurance-information.

Do I need a visa to travel to Turkey?

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Turkey. Visas must be obtained through the e-Visa system. For the most up to date information, please view the Smarttraveller page here - https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/europe/turkiye

Is it safe to travel to Turkey?

While in Turkey, we advise that you remain aware of your surroundings at all times. Never leave your belongings unattended, always keep an eye or a firm grip on cameras and shoulder bags, and avoid travelling alone, especially at night. Caution should be adopted in larger cities. When staying in hotels, secure all valuables and documents in a safe. A neck wallet or money belt while travelling, for the safe-keeping of your passport, flight tickets, cash and other valuable items is strongly recommended. Leave your jewellery at home. These are the same safety precautions we recommend when travelling to any destination.

What weather can I expect?

Turkey is a large country split into seven regions. As a rule of thumb the Marmara, Aegean and Mediterranean coasts have typical Mediterranean climates with hot summers and mild, wet winters. In the east it is more mountainous with warm summers and very cold, snowy winters. Central Turkey (Cappadocia), has low rainfall, very dry, hot summers and very cold winters. Istanbul and coastal areas can experience very high humidity. We will endeavor to hike early in the mornings and through shaded areas to minimise the suns effect. Generally speaking it is about 15-20 degrees in November which is ideal for trekking. It will be warmer during the days and colder at nights. We will supply you with a comprehensive packing list to prepare you for all eventualities.

Can I drink the water in Turkey?

Generally speaking, it’s probably best to drink filtered or bottled water when travelling in Turkey. Many hotels and lodges provide safe drinking water, while bottled water is another alternative. Water consumption should be about two litres a day. Rehydration salts, motion sickness tablets, and diarrhoea blockers are available from many pharmacies.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Turkey?

Major credit cards are accepted by most large shops, hotels and restaurants, although smaller vendors and market stalls often only accept cash.

Do I require any vaccinations to travel to Turkey?

Approximately two months prior to departure, you should consult your GP for up-to-date medical travel and vaccination information.

The most common vaccinations for Turkey include:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Rabies

All information is subject to change and will be confirmed upon your registration.
