The Difference You'll Make
Testigo Africa is an Australian-based charity that has been operating in Tanzania for 15 years. They’ve positively impacted over 15,000 Masai with their water projects and permaculture training in 38 villages, and trained school students and their teachers in remote boarding schools in rural Tanzania. Their permaculture training provides a peer-to-peer training model; Masai women and men they’ve trained become trainers for other villages, and students train the incoming students at their schools. This provides not only organic nutritional produce but creates micro-entrepreneurs many of whom are entering the local economy and experiencing livelihoods for the first time.
The funds raised on the Mt Kilimanjaro climb will support Testigo in expanding their permaculture training to additional schools and villages, undertaking water rehabilitation projects in remote communities, and providing support for medical assistance.

Trip notes
Upon arrival in Kilimanjaro, there will be one group transfer available (exact time TBA) to the hotel in Moshi. The guide will deliver a full briefing as well as carry out equipment checks and help with hiring additional equipment if needed. Moshi is located in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro and is known as a coffee-producing hub as they boast vast coffee plantations.
Accommodation: Lodge
Meals: Nil
This morning we’ll drive from Moshi to the Lemosho gate, which takes approximately two and a half hours. Upon arrival at the trailhead, we’ll eat lunch, complete entry formalities and then commence trekking through lush undisturbed forest where we may be lucky enough to see Colobus monkeys. The path undulates with some steep sections in places before we reach our campsite.
Accommodation: Camping
Trekking distance: 6km
Elevation gain: 400m
Meals: B L D
Today our trek will begin in the forest; however, we'll soon leave this ecosystem behind, following a steep track into a zone of giant heather and volcanic rock. This is a full day ascending through the lush rolling hills below the Shira Plateau. Shira is the third of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic cones, filled with the lava flow from Kibo and its rim has eroded and been blasted away by weather and volcanic action. Finally, the trail begins to ease as we reach the edge of the plateau and reach camp at Shira One. The view of Kibo from across the plateau is incredible.
Accommodation: Camping
Trekking distance: 8km
Elevation gain: 700m
Meals: B L D
Our third day on the mountain consists of a trek across the Shira Plateau with an optional climb to Shira Cathedral (3,880m). Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth. The day finishes with a gradual climb to Shira Two Camp.
Accommodation: Camping
Trekking distance: 10km
Elevation gain: 300m
Meals: B L D
Our climb today takes us steadily up and over the expansive ridge lines of high desert to Lava Tower. This tower is a 300-foot-high volcanic plug. If time and energy allow, we’ll scramble to the top of the tower for fabulous panoramic views. From Lava Tower we begin a steep descent into the Barranco Valley, passing large flowering plants. Although we’re ending today at almost the same elevation as we started, it is very important for acclimatisation and will help your body prepare for summit day. Barranco Camp is in a beautiful, sheltered valley below the imposing Barranco Wall.
Accommodation: Camping
Trekking distance: 10.1km
Elevation gain: 750m, Loss: 700m
Meals: B L D
After breakfast, we leave Barranco Camp and begin our climb up the Barranco Wall. This is an impressive scramble where we’ll be rewarded with fantastic views back towards camp. The porters climbing the wall are also an impressive sight. From the top, at 4,200m, we’ll follow an undulating path around the mountain side. On a clear day there are spectacular views of Kibo to our left and Mount Meru to our right. After descending into the Karanga Valley, our climb takes us up a short steep path to Karanga Camp.
Accommodation: Camping
Trekking distance: 5.5km
Elevation gain: 350m, Loss: 250m
Meals: B L D
Today we’ll spend the morning climbing steadily on to Barafu, which is Swahili for ice! This camp is located on the ridge below the summit cone. We have now completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. We’ll arrive at Barafu in time to spend the afternoon resting and enjoy an early dinner in preparation for the summit climb. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo can be seen from this position.
Accommodation: Camping
Trekking distance: 3km
Elevation gain: 650m
Meals: B L D
It’s summit day! In the early hours of the morning we’ll begin our final ascent to the summit of Uhuru Peak. This part of the climb takes approximately 6-8 hours. It can be very cold at night at these elevations, but it will be quite warm by the end of the hiking day and therefore we’ll want clothing for both extremes. Just when we think we’ve had enough of climbing in the dark, the sun will rise and we’ll be rewarded with a rich red sky framing Mawenzi. At Stella Point (5,750m) we’ll join the crater rim. From here, climb gently to Uhuru Peak which is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. From the summit the descent will take us straight down to Mweka Hut, with lunch served on the way. This part of the descent takes about 6 hours. Later in the evening enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.
Accommodation: Camping
Trekking distance: 11km
Elevation gain: 1,295m, Loss: 2,785m

This morning we’ll descend straight to the gate through lush forest. Make sure to keep an eye out for monkeys along the way! From Mweka Village, we’ll return to our lodge in Arusha where we’ll rest before a celebratory dinner!

How challenging is this adventure?
The Kilimanjaro trek is ranked 5/5. While no extensive trekking experience is required prior to registering, our adventures are specifically designed for people who are reasonably fit and willing to train. The Kilimanjaro trek is a physical challenge with long, consecutive days of trekking at high altitudes. The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the experience. Reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro does not require mountain climbing skills. The actual climb is more like a very long walk up stairs, however, we cannot stress enough the importance of having the right trekking equipment and proper training. You will be well supported on the adventure, with the guides and your team all cheering you on. You are free to move at your own pace and we will take frequent breaks.
How many people will be on my adventure?
We believe small group travel is better for the planet, and better for you. Our adventures average between 10 - 30 participants, connected by their commitment to the greater good.
Can I join an Inspired Adventure on my own?
Of course, most people do! Throughout your adventure journey, we will connect you with your fellow adventurers so you can get to know each other before you hit the road.
What is the general age range of participants?
The minimum age for this adventure is 18, however younger ages are considered on application. We have had participants aged 16–84+ take part in our challenges, all united by their sense of philanthropy and adventure.
I have dietary requirements, will I be catered for?
Of course, we will happily arrange for any dietary requirements you’ve noted during booking to be catered for. Please advise your local guide on Day 1 as well. You will be fed very well while you’re on the adventure, but if you have a very specific dietary requirement or severe allergies, often it’s best to pack some extra things as back-up.
Who is Inspired Adventures?

Over the last 20 years, Inspired Adventures has taken over 8,000 people, just like you, on adventures all around the world, raising over $49 million for important causes. When you choose to travel with Inspired Adventures and Testigo, you can be confident you’re in the best hands.
How do I train for this adventure?
It is essential that you prepare for this challenge. We will provide you with a training guide when you register, but. we recommend that you consult your GP and a personal trainer to develop a personalised training plan that will prepare you for the challenge. The best physical preparation for a Kilimanjaro climb is any activity that simulates, as far as possible, the demands on your body during your ascent and descent.
You should aim to make walking up and down hills the main part of your training. Take regular and increasingly long walks to develop your muscles. You should be able to walk with a small pack for up to 8 hours a day for a number of consecutive days, and you will be walking for up to 15 hours on summit day.
What is the accommodation?
While in Moshi and Arusha, you will be staying in a basic but comfortable lodge which has all the usual facilities you would expect.
You will be camping in twin-share tents for the seven nights on the mountain. Sleeping bags and mats are not included but can be hired at an additional cost. All your gear, except that which you’ll carry in your day pack, will be carried for you by the porters, who will run on ahead of you so when you arrive in the late afternoon, the campsite will be set up for you already.
Will I be sharing accommodation?
Accommodation on this adventure is based on twin-share. You will be paired with a teammate of the same gender and, whenever possible, age group. Single rooms are available at an additional cost and subject to availability.
I’m travelling with a friend, can we stay together?

It’s normal to worry you won’t meet your fundraising target, but we know you can do it. In fact, with the support of Inspired Adventures, almost everyone goes on to raise far more than they imagined.
By registering for the adventure, you agree to raise the minimum fundraising amount specified.
