The Difference You'll Make
This August 2024, embark on a special journey with us as we mark 60 years of Wayside Chapel. Join Rev Jon Owen, CEO and Pastor, for a 60km trek along the iconic Larapinta Trail, symbolising each year of Wayside's commitment to compassion and community.
As you traverse the vibrant red paths of the West MacDonnell Ranges and delve into shaded gorges, you’ll be immersed in the rich history and stories of Australia's First Peoples.
Wayside Chapel has been a place of hope and equality since its inception in 1964. Soon after opening, founder Rev. Ted Noffs initiated the first Foundation for Aboriginal Affairs at Wayside Kings Cross, aspiring to achieve equality for Aboriginal people through opportunity. In a historic move, Charlie Perkins co-led a group of uni students on a bus from Wayside through rural NSW in 1965, challenging entrenched racism against Indigenous Australians. These actions marked the beginning of Wayside’s enduring journey alongside our First Nations peoples.
Now, as we celebrate 60 years of service, we invite you to join us in stepping forward into the future. We'll walk together not just for adventure, but to raise vital funds that will help provide wrap-around care and support for people sleeping rough or in crisis. Each day, over 300 individuals seek connection and support at Wayside. Despite representing only three percent of Australia’s population, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people form over a quarter of our community.
By committing to this epic challenge, you will stand in solidarity with First Nations communities, acknowledging their experiences and contributing to their healing. With each stride you’ll help provide holistic, culturally safe care to engage our visitors and improve their wellbeing, addressing the challenges of addiction, homelessness, and the long-lasting effects of trauma and disconnection. Wayside Chapel is committed to closing the gap with connection, compassion, and care, one person at a time. If you share this vision, come walk with us.
Together, on this 60km journey, we will tread a path of progress and hope along the Larapinta Trail, honouring 60 years of Wayside’s impact.
