The Difference You'll Make

Biodiversity loss is accelerating at an alarming rate. Without urgent action to protect and restore habitats, wildlife and the landscapes we love will vanish. In South Australia, land clearing has already wiped out much of the state’s natural vegetation - only 5% remains in some areas. The consequences are devastating: 26 plants, 23 mammals, and 2 bird species have already been lost.
Trees for Life has been working hard to safeguard our biodiversity since 1981, through revegetation and protecting bushland, farm land and urban terrain. By joining this unforgettable trek on Kangaroo Island, you’ll help fund critical habitat restoration, create wildlife corridors, and give our precious ecosystems a chance to thrive.
Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Kangaroo Island. Walk among native kangaroos and echidnas at Snake Lagoon. Marvel at the breathtaking Remarkable Rocks and take in panoramic views of the mighty Southern Ocean. Spot birds of prey soaring above or dolphins gliding through crystal-clear waters.

This is more than a trek - it’s a chance to protect our planet. Together, we can create thriving landscapes and leave a legacy of hope for future generations. Sign up today and join us in conserving and restoring South Australian habitats.

Trip notes
Make your own way to Adelaide, where we’ll be meeting the rest of the team and our guide for a morning departure. Our adventure begins with a drive to Cape Jervis, where we’ll board the scenic ferry before arriving at Kangaroo Island, ready to tackle our adventure. The rest of the day will be spent settling into our surroundings with some short walks to get us warmed up for the days ahead.
Accommodation: Cabin with shared facilities
Trekking Distance: 2-6 km

For our first full day of trekking, we’ll be making our way to the Kangaroo Island wilderness trail to get started. Firstly, we’ll spend some time exploring the National Park Visitors Centre to learn about the history and wilderness of this area before setting off. The first section of the trail leads us to Snake Lagoon as we pass through various forest and coastal vegetation. Make sure to keep an eye out for kangaroos and echidnas along the way! As the day comes to a close, we’ll arrive at the tall sugar gums that mark Snake Lagoon. We return to our accommodation tonight and reminisce on all that we have accomplished so far over dinner.

Trekking Distance: 10.5 km

Today, we return to Snake Lagoon to follow another trail; this one to the iconic Remarkable Rocks. We begin along the coast and are soon rewarded with our first views of the mighty Southern Ocean. As we continue along the coastline, you may spot birds of prey and bottle-nosed dolphins when they surface to hunt for fish. We continue on the coastline until we see Cape Du Couedic Lighthouse in the distance, which we will explore. From here, we’ll make our way to Wiers Cove, a beautiful bay surrounded by calcarenite cliffs and end our walk at Remarkable Rocks.
Accommodation: Cabin with shared facilities
Trekking Distance: 22.5 km

Be prepared for more stunning sights, as today’s trek offers coastal views for the majority of the day, including fascinating rock formations. We then cut inland through tall Mallee forests and low coastal heath, and make our way to the Hanson Bay headland and small settlement. You may wish to dip your toes in the crystal blue waters to celebrate a day well done, before we return to our accommodation for our final evening together, celebrating all that we have accomplished.
Accommodation: Cabin with shared facilities
Trekking Distance: 16 km

Our final day of walking is shorter but no less spectacular than the previous days, making our way to Kelly Hill Caves. It is finally time to bid farewell to Kangaroo Island and the magical time we have all shared here. Once we board the ferry, the island becomes increasingly tiny on the horizon, and we return to Adelaide filled with memories to last a lifetime. We will arrive back in Adelaide in the late afternoon, and ask that you not book your flight home until after 7:30pm.
