The Difference You'll Make

Join UN Women Australia for an unforgettable experience along Tasmania’s spectacular Bay of Fires. On this once in a lifetime trek, you’ll explore the region’s pristine coastlines, discover hidden coves, and walk beside striking orange lichen-covered rocks and crystal clear waters. You’ll uncover the stories of a historic pink granite lighthouse, spot native wildlife and birdlife, and experience Tasmania’s warm hospitality. Along the way, you’ll share this inspiring journey with a group of passionate, like-minded individuals. Together, you’ll not only forge lasting friendships but also walk with purpose.

By taking part in UN Women - Trek for Rights Bay of Fires 2026, you’ll help to put gender equality at the heart of climate action. In 2023 alone, disasters caused 26.4 million internal displacements worldwide. While the climate crisis affects us all, women and girls are most impacted. Their livelihoods, health, and safety are increasingly at risk as climate change worsens existing gender inequalities. Funds raised will support the UN Women's EmPower Program, that supports women to thrive in a changing climate. With a focus on renewable energy, the program provides financial support and skills development to empower women to become renewable energy entrepreneurs – creating sustainable livelihoods and strengthening the resilience of their families and communities. Your support also helps ensure women are represented in climate decision-making, bringing their voices and wisdom to the table.

Trek notes

We recommend arriving in Launceston on 22 March due to the early start on day one.

We meet our guide and the rest of the team at 7:45am for a briefing, and then we depart Launceston and head out to Binalong Bay where we’ll ease our way into our first trek through coastal heath and eucalypt forest. Along our walk through the Humbug Point Nature Recreation Area, we’ll see an abundance of wildflowers, orchids and xantheria. If we’re lucky, we may see Australian fur seals perched upon granite boulders! After some lunch, we’ll continue trekking along this well-protected trail and finish in Moulting Bay, an important wetland and habitat for black swans and migratory seabirds.

Accommodation: 4-star hotel

Trekking distance: 11km

Today’s hike is an interesting mix of changing landscapes within the Bay of Fires Conservation Area – consisting of secluded beaches, dark tannin-stained lagoons, and contrasting stretches of pebbly shoreline. Beginning at Policeman’s Point we usually spot many species of birds which congregate around the outlet of Ansons Bay. These may include pelicans, cormorants and oystercatchers. After a stretch of soft sand walking, we reach the first segment of Pebbly Beaches – featuring numerous 1km long stretches of coastal cobblestones. There is some rock scrambling along the way, so be prepared - trekking poles are useful for the beach sections, but you’ll need two hands for rock scrambling! Shortly after we reach another stunning expanse of white sandy beach which is so remote you’re unlikely to notice any signs of people. Regular granite headlands are crossed once again – each guarding their own hidden pocket of paradise. Somewhere along here we will select a suitable lunch spot, and maybe take the opportunity for a swim. Passing over a forested hill, it’s not much further until we reach The Gardens, our end point of the hike today.

Accommodation: 4-star hotel

Trekking distance: 13 km

Today’s walk is packed full of highlights. We start our day at larapuna/Eddystone Point – adorned with its beautifully grand lighthouse, built in 1889 from locally quarried granite. This natural promontory is a fascinating site of historic importance to both European and Aboriginal Tasmanians. Leaving the lighthouse, we break out onto an expansive dune-swept beach, often teeming with birdlife.

The remainder of the day is spent enjoying seemingly endless coves – each being worthy of their own picture-perfect postcard. There are numerous shelly beaches to inspect, and lovely small bays for swimming. This area also boasts some of the more interesting rock formations of the trip, awaiting decipherment from a creative type’s imagination. We continue south along more beautiful rocky headlands, with coastal wattle, pigface and saltbush aplenty and countless white beaches. We’ll come across some dune-swept beaches before finishing at Ansons Bay, crossing a shallow inlet to meet up with the bus.

Accommodation: 4-star hotel

Trekking distance: 10 km

This morning we pack our gear and head off to the Blue Tier Regional Reserve. Our trek today looks different to our past treks, walking through lush Beech myrtle forest with plenty of alpine species. This trail begins and ends at the Stockyard Campground at the end of Poimena Road, traversing through a wonderful range of vegetation as we make our way to the summit of Mt Poimena (816m). There is an incredible variety of mosses and ferns. The track can get quite wet and muddy in certain areas, so hiking boots are recommended for today’s walk. We then return to Launceston at approximately 5 pm. Please book return flights home after 6:30 pm.

How challenging is this experience?

This experience is ranked 3/5. While no extensive trekking experience is required prior to registering, our experiences are specifically designed for people who are relatively fit and willing to train. The Bay of Fires Trek is a physical challenge, involving trekking approximately 40 kilometres over 4 days. The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the experience.

You will be well supported with the guides and your team all cheering you on. You are free to move at your own pace and we will take frequent breaks.

How many people will be on my trek?

We believe small group travel is better for the planet, and better for you. Our treks average between 10 - 20 participants, connected by their commitment to the greater good.

Can I join an Inspired Adventure on my own?

Of course, most people do! Throughout your journey, we will connect you with your fellow trekkers so you can get to know each other before you hit the road.

What is the general age range of participants?

The minimum age is 18, however younger ages are considered on application. We have had participants aged 16–84+ take part in our challenges, all united by their sense of philanthropy and adventure.

I have dietary requirements, will I be catered for?

Of course, we will happily arrange for any dietary requirements you’ve noted during booking to be catered for. Please advise your local guide on Day 1 as well. You will be fed very well while you’re on the trek, but if you have a very specific dietary requirement or severe allergies, often it’s best to pack some extra things as back-up.

Do I have to carry my own bag?

You'll only need to carry a day bag with essentials for your day of activities. Your luggage/big backpacks will either stay at your accommodation, be transferred to your next accommodation, or will be carried by porters.

Who is Inspired Adventures?

UN Women Australia has partnered with Inspired Adventures to bring you this experience of a lifetime. Over the last 20 years, Inspired Adventures has taken over 8,000 people, just like you, on experiences all around the world, raising over $50 million for important causes. When you choose to travel with Inspired Adventures and UN Women Australia, you can be confident you’re in the best hands.

How do I train for this trek?

We will provide you with information on how to prepare for your trek when you register. In addition, we recommend that you consult your GP and a personal trainer to develop a training plan that will prepare you for the challenge.

As part of your training, we recommend making use of your free time to complete several day hikes. You should aim to be able to walk in sandy and hilly terrain for 5+ hours comfortably and get up and do it again the next day.

It is sensible to start training as early as possible before you go on your trek.

How is my luggage transported?

You will only need to carry a day-pack with you each day. Your main luggage will stay at the accommodation.

What is the accommodation like?

Accommodation is in a 4-star hotel based on twin-share. You can expect the usual facilities and amenities.

Will I be sharing accommodation?

Accommodation is based on twin-share. You will be paired with a teammate of the same gender and, whenever possible, age group. Single rooms are available at an additional cost and subject to availability.

I’m travelling with a friend, can we stay together?

Absolutely! If you’re travelling with a friend, please make note of this and we will pair you together.

How do I fundraise?

Never fundraised before? Not sure where to start? No worries, we don’t expect you to do it alone. You will have regular support from the Inspired Adventures fundraising team, who will help you make a fundraising plan to meet your target. Alongside personalised coaching, we will also send you lots of ideas and resources on how to fundraise. From online fundraising to trivia nights, to bake sales and out-of-the-box ideas, we have years and years of tried and tested tips to make your fundraising a success.

What happens if I don’t meet my fundraising target?

It’s normal to worry you won’t meet your fundraising target, but we know you can do it. In fact, with the support of Inspired Adventures, almost everyone goes on to raise far more than they imagined.

By registering for the trek, you agree to raise the minimum fundraising amount specified. Like you, we are looking to make a significant impact for our charity partners, so the goal is for each person to have met their fundraising target before departure. If you fail to raise the minimum fundraising target by this time, we will review the situation on a case-by-case basis.

I’m travelling with a friend, can we fundraise together?

Absolutely! Fundraising with a friend is a great idea. Just remember the fundraising target is per person, so you will each need to meet the minimum fundraising goal to participate. We know you can do it.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

The funds raised for UN Women Australia are tax-deductible (conditions apply).

How much does it cost to participate in this experience?

The total cost to participate is $3,490 which is inclusive of:

  • Registration fee: $390 (non-refundable after 5 days)
  • Travel cost: $3,100 (includes a $950 non-refundable travel deposit)
