We’ll see views of this unique mountainous landscape akin to the wonders of Middle Earth as we head further on the trail and follow the terraces of the Waiau River through red and mountain beech forests. We’ll eventually reach a swing bridge and stop for a packed lunch at Rainbow Reach. About the adventure
How challenging is this adventure?
The Milford Sound trekking and cycling adventure is rated a moderate 3/5. While no extensive trekking experience is required prior to registering, our adventures are specifically designed for people who are relatively fit and willing to train. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and we suggest 4 hours of cycling and hiking per week for three months leading up to your trip. You will need to be able to walk for 3-4 hours at a time on undulating paths. This is a physical challenge, and the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the experience. We recommend that in the months leading up to your trip, you increase your physical fitness with aerobic exercise.
What is the terrain like?
While trekking, the terrain is flat and gradually undulating. While there are steady inclines throughout, the trail is only very steep for short periods of time.
Most of the cycle trail is hard-packed gravel, we recommend training on compacted gravel trails, and completing a multi-day ride prior to your trip to get used to being in the saddle for long periods of time.
What is the closest airport?
Your adventure begins in Queenstown, where the closest airport is Queenstown International Airport (ZQN). You will need to book your own flights for this adventure.
Can I join an Inspired Adventure on my own?
Of course, most people do! Throughout your adventure journey, we will connect you with your fellow adventurers so you can get to know each other before you hit the road.
Who will I be travelling with?
Our average group size at Inspired Adventures ranges from 10 to 20 people. You can be sure that you have all come together with the shared purpose of making a difference to others and having the adventure of a lifetime.
The group will be led by a local tour guide with expert knowledge of the region. Many groups will also be accompanied by an Inspired Adventures team leader or doctor to support and motivate the team.
Where applicable, a charity representative may also join the team. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your chosen charity and their work.
What is the general age range of participants?
The minimum age for this adventure is 18, however younger ages are considered on application. We have had participants aged 16–80+ take part in our challenges, all united by their sense of philanthropy and adventure.
Is there a support crew?
A local guide will accompany the group throughout the trip. Local guides are highly experienced and have a strong knowledge and love of their country. They are our trusted partners on the ground. If you have any questions during the adventure or need assistance they are there to help.
Inspired Adventures may send a team leader with the group to help ensure the smooth running of the adventure. They will act as an assistant to the Local Guide and help liaise with the team and provide support. You will be advised and introduced to your Inspired Adventures Team Leader if one will be accompanying your group.
On some adventures, the charity may elect to send a representative to complete the challenge with the group. They are not expected to act as a guide, rather they represent the charity and can answer any questions you might have about the work of the organisation. You will be advised and introduced to your Charity Representative if one will be accompanying your group.
Fitness and training
How do I train for this adventure?
We will provide you with basic information on how to prepare for your adventure when you register. We recommend that you consult your GP and a personal trainer to develop a training plan that will prepare you for the challenge.
It is sensible to start training as early as possible before you go on your trek. As part of your training, we recommend making use of your weekends to complete a full-day hike or cycle and if possible, an overnight hike. You should aim to walk in hilly terrain for 6-8 hours and get up to do it again the following day comfortably. Conventional exercise routines which build strength, fitness and stamina, such as aerobics and light weight training can be beneficial, particularly if your fitness level is less than ideal.
Accommodation
What is the accommodation like?
We will be staying in 3 star hotels, with all the usual amenities you can expect.
Will I be sharing accommodation?
Accommodation on this adventure is based on twin-share. You will be paired with a teammate of the same gender and, whenever possible, age group. Single rooms are available at an additional cost and subject to availability.
I’m travelling with a friend, can we stay together?
If you’re travelling with a friend, please make note of this and we will pair you together.
What to expect
What is the food like?
A healthy and delicious range of food will be provided for all meals, including picnic lunches. Some meals come from local cafes and bakeries with options of sandwiches and wraps with various fillings, and delicious cakes for dessert.
I have dietary requirements, will I be catered for?
Of course, we will happily arrange for any dietary requirements you’ve noted during booking to be catered for. A special meal can always be prepared to meet individual needs specified in advance.
Will I have mobile phone reception?
The availability of mobile phone reception will depend on your phone provider, and generally there is little phone reception outside of the towns in Fiordland. You will have reception every night on this trip at your accommodation, except for night 3 on the boat on Milford Sound.
What do I need to pack?
You will be sent a comprehensive packing list after you register for the adventure with everything you need to consider.
What happens if there is a medical emergency?
Providing the safest possible environment is our highest priority and we have an outstanding safety record. All Inspired Adventures guides and Team Leaders are first aid trained. Our guides carry a satellite phone to be used if further assistance is required.
Fundraising
How do I fundraise?
Never fundraised before? Not sure where to start? No worries, we don’t expect you to do it alone. You will have regular support from the Inspired Adventures fundraising team, who will help you make a fundraising plan to meet your target. Alongside personalised coaching, we will also send you lots of ideas and resources on how to fundraise. From online fundraising to trivia nights, to bake sales and out-of-the-box ideas, we have years and years of tried and tested tips to make your fundraising a success.
What happens if I don’t meet my fundraising target?
It’s normal to worry you won’t meet your fundraising target, but we know you can do it. In fact, with the support of Inspired Adventures, almost everyone goes on to raise far more than they imagined.
By registering for the adventure, you agree to raise the minimum fundraising amount specified. Like you, we are looking to make a significant impact for our charity partners, so the goal is for each person to have met their fundraising target before departure. If you fail to raise the minimum fundraising target by this time, we will review the situation on a case-by-case basis.
I’m travelling with a friend, can we fundraise together?
Absolutely! Fundraising with a friend is a great idea. Just remember the fundraising target is per person, so you will each need to meet the minimum fundraising goal to participate. We know you can do it.
