Trip notes
Day 1: Olympia to Lake Quinault
The day begins when you meet your team and guides in Olympia, followed by a scenic drive out to the Olympic Peninsula. We’ll head west through farmland and historic logging towns before reaching Lake Quinault and the amazing Quinault Rainforest, “Valley of the Giants.”. After following the East Fork Quinault River, we’ll leave the van behind to explore farther up the river valley on foot. We’ll gradually climb through towering Sitka Spruce trees, abundant moss, ferns, and wildflowers as we head up a small ridge. Here the trail quickly drops back down to rejoin the East Fork Quinault River where the blue-green waters cut through a narrow gorge. We’ll stop to enjoy the fantastic views as we cross Pony Bridge, eat a delicious picnic lunch, and relax along this serene river. We’ll retrace our steps back to the van and continue our drive out to the Pacific Ocean and set up camp at our scenic campsite set on a small bluff overlooking the ocean.

Day 2: Pacific Ocean Coastline
After a hearty breakfast at camp, we’ll set out for a day of exploration of the beaches of the Pacific Ocean. This stretch of protected coastline is home to some of the most pristine and untouched coastal areas in the U.S. We’ll have time to go in the water, trek along sandy and pebble-strewn beaches, soak up sweeping views, explore tidal pools and keep an eye out for large marine mammals. Our guide will serve us a delicious lunch on the beach or trail, and we’ll round out our fun-filled day with a beach BBQ or gourmet dinner and a campfire while enjoying the sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

With over 140 inches of rain per year, this is one of the nation’s largest temperate rainforests, and includes ancient trees towering up to 300 feet in height, moss-draped nurse logs, incredible biodiversity, and abundant wildlife. We’ll trek up the wild Hoh River and explore all that the rainforest has to offer, such as elk, deer, black bears, bald eagles and fascinating banana slugs. Immense cushions of moss absorb sounds, contributing to the Hoh River’s title as “The Quietest Place in the U.S.”. After a gourmet trail lunch and our fill of trekking, we’ll make our way back to the trailhead and return to camp for our last dinner by the ocean.

Day 4: Quileute Indian Reservation
On our final day, we’ll pack up camp, and head north to the Quileute Indian Reservation and the village of La Push, WA. Just north of this tribal center and across the Quillayute River is Rialto Beach, where our trek takes us north along the ocean. We’ll keep our eyes out for whales, sea lions, otters, as well as eagles and other sea birds. Off-shore, waves crash against the beautiful sea stacks and small islands such as Gunsight Rock and James Island. After a couple miles, we’ll reach the iconic Hole-in-the-Wall, a rocky arch carved out by the power of the waves crashing against the sea cliffs that once stood here. If the tide is low, we’ll be able to climb through the arch and explore the other side or use the overland trail to climb above the arch for sweeping views of the coastline. We’ll enjoy a final picnic lunch and retrace our steps to make our way back to Olympia where we’ll say our goodbyes, knowing we’ve had an unforgettable 4 days!

About the adventure
How challenging is this adventure?
Your adventure is ranked a moderate 2/5. While no extensive trekking experience is required prior to registering, our adventures are specifically designed for people who are relatively fit and willing to train. The Olympic Basecamp trek is a physical challenge, and the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the experience. It is essential that you prepare for this challenge.

Of course, most people do! Throughout your adventure journey, we will connect you with your fellow adventurers so you can get to know each other before you hit the road.

The group will be led by a local tour guide with expert knowledge of the region. Many groups will also be accompanied by an Inspired Adventures team leader or doctor to support and motivate the team.
Where applicable, a charity representative may also join the team. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your chosen charity and their work.

Fitness and training
How do I train for this adventure?
We will provide you with basic information on how to prepare for your adventure when you register. We recommend that you consult your GP and a personal trainer to develop a training plan that will prepare you for the challenge.
It is sensible to start training as early as possible before you go on your trek. As part of your training, we recommend making use of your weekends to complete a full day hike and if possible, an overnight hike. You should aim to walk in hilly terrain for 6-8 hours and get up to do it again the following day comfortably. Conventional exercise routines which build strength, fitness and stamina, such as aerobics and light weight training can be beneficial, particularly if your fitness level is less than ideal.
In addition to your physical training, it’s important to be mentally prepared for the challenge. You might encounter setbacks and difficult periods during the trek, but remind yourself that many people have achieved this feat before you, and you can do it too. Maintain a positive attitude, and remember your guide will be there to encourage and inspire you all the way!
Accommodation
What is the accommodation like?
You will be camping at multiple campsites, which may vary depending on availability and seasonality. The tents are spacious and include comfortable sleeping pads, sleeping bags, and camp pillows.
Will I be sharing accommodation?
Accommodation on this adventure is based on twin-share. When in twin share, you will be paired with a teammate(s) of the same gender and, whenever possible, age group.
I’m travelling with a friend, can we stay together?
If you’re travelling with a friend, please make note of this and where possible, we will pair you together.
What to expect
What is the food like?
You will be served a diversity of tasty meals packed full of critical carbohydrates, proteins and fats. These tend to be foods that travel well in the outdoors – rice, pastas, lentils, beans, couscous, packaged meats, nuts, breads, oatmeal, granola, and more.
For optimal taste and energy, all meals are supplemented with spices, herbs, oils, cheeses, butter, sugar, and fruits and vegetables (fresh and dried). In addition, you will be provided with an assortment of trail mix, snacks, and dried fruits to eat at your own discretion.
I have dietary requirements, will I be catered for?
Of course, we will do our best to arrange for any dietary requirements you’ve noted during booking to be catered for. Please note in the rural parts of this itinerary, there may be limited choices for those with dietary requirements.
Will I have mobile phone reception?
The mobile phone reception/service will most likely be unreliable but don’t worry it is all part of the experience.
Will I have access to electricity?
Access to electricity is limited. We recommend bringing along a portable recharging device, some of which can be recharged using solar energy. Wifi is also not available.
What do I need to pack?
You will be sent a comprehensive packing list after you register for the adventure with everything you need to consider.
You need to bring your main piece of luggage as well as a small to medium daypack for hiking walks (20-25 litres). Your main luggage/bag will be transferred for you to the next destination while you are hiking.
You will need to pack good walking shoes, a hat, some sunscreen, and a daypack. We strongly recommend bringing a pair of walking poles. Please note, these cannot be obtained locally.
What happens if there is a medical emergency?
Providing the safest possible environment is our highest priority and we have an outstanding safety record.
All Inspired Adventures guides and Team Leaders are first aid trained. Our guides carry a satellite phone to be used if further assistance is required.
