Trip notes

Day 1: Merimbula - Boyds Tower to Lake Curalo

We depart Merimbula at 8.15am and head south stopping en route for morning tea at Eden. The Bundian Way Story Trail begins at Cocora Beach, where we will trek through native fauna rich with sweeping coastal views over Twofold Bay. We can expect wildlife encounters and to learn about the beautifully crafted stories about the people who have walked the trails for thousands of years. Stopping by the Budginbro Lookout, we'll continue to walk the sandy beach concluding at Quarantine Bay.

We then head to Eden en route to Lake Curalo for an afternoon walk. The boardwalk and walking track meanders around the lakeshore, through swamp melaleuca forest, across salt marsh and over the shallow water where you can see reeds, fish, and many species of bird life before you reach the estuary mouth.

Whales frequent the area from late May to early December so it’s a great time for whale watching while walking along the trail. After the day’s walk, we head back to our accommodation for well-earned pre-dinner nibbles followed by a fabulous meal prepared by our guides.

Trekking Distance: 8km (3.5 hrs approx)

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Leather Jacket Bay

After breakfast, our trek today undulates south past spectacular coastal forest, sandy beaches, rocky bays, sheltered inlets, and ocean platforms. Leather Jacket Bay offers a scenic stretch of red rocks, coloured by iron oxide which cemented the sand particles together many millions of years ago, while small and peaceful Mowarry provides a picturesque sandy beach.

There are plenty of spots along the trail to rest and relax, or to enjoy a spot of birdwatching. Be sure to keep your eyes open for the endangered ground parrots or rare striated field wrens. There is a myriad of other wildlife so if you are lucky, you might catch sight of echidna, kangaroo, or goanna in the area. After the day’s walk, we head back to our accommodation for another delicious dinner and time spent with our teammates.

Trekking Distance: 13.5km (6hrs approx)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Saltwater Creek to Bittangabee Bay

After breakfast and lunch making, we begin walking today where we finished yesterday and head south along the stunning Light to Light trail. The walk from Saltwater Creek to Bittangabee Bay is a gently undulating section. It passes through lovely sections of coastal forest, heath, and rock platforms. As usual, we'll be looking out for the many spectacular creatures that call this area home and enjoying the challenge of the coastal terrain.

Tonight, we'll share our last dinner as a team and prepare for our final day of walking.

Trekking Distance: 9.5km (4-4.5 hrs approx)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 4: Bittangabee to Green Cape & Haycock Bay to Barmouth Beach Walk - return to Merimbula

Today we have two shorter walks including the last section of the Light to Light Walk and a short scenic walk just north of Eden. This last section of the Light to Light follows a route that has been travelled by lightkeepers over many years. Originally, supplies for the lighthouse were off-loaded at Bittangabee Bay and remnants of the old horse-drawn tram track still remain.

We travel north through Eden and stop off en route to Merimbula for our last walk of the trip – the spectacular Haycock Bay to Barmouth Beach walk. This pleasant walk follows the headland on the southern shore of the Pambula River estuary. Offering spectacular views along the pristine coastline of the NSW far south coast, this walk captures the remote beauty of Beowa National Park. On this walk pass through a range of landscapes from windswept heath to woodlands while taking in views of rugged rock formations and dramatic cliff lines. From here we head back to Merimbula. We aim to be back in town by approximately 4.30-5pm so if you’re flying out after the tour please do not book flights before 6.30pm.

About the adventure

How challenging is this adventure?

Your adventure is ranked a moderate 2.5/5. While no trekking experience is required prior to registering, our adventures are specifically designed for people who are relatively fit and willing to train. The Sapphire Coast trek is a physical challenge, and the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the experience. It is essential that you prepare for this challenge.

Can I join an Inspired Adventure on my own?

Of course, most people do! Throughout your adventure journey, we will connect you with your fellow adventurers so you can get to know each other before you hit the road.

Who will I be travelling with?

Our average group size at Inspired Adventures ranges from 10 to 20 people. You can be sure that you have all come together with the shared purpose of making a difference to others and having the adventure of a lifetime.

The group will be led by a local tour guide with expert knowledge of the region. Many groups will also be accompanied by an Inspired Adventures team leader or doctor to support and motivate the team.

Where applicable, a charity representative may also join the team. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your chosen charity and their work.

What is the general age range of participants?

The minimum age for this adventure is 18, however younger ages are considered on application. We have had participants aged 16–80+ take part in our challenges, all united by their sense of philanthropy and adventure.

Is there a support crew?

A local guide will accompany the group throughout the trip. Local guides are highly experienced and have a strong knowledge and love of their country. They are our trusted partners on the ground. If you have any questions during the adventure or need assistance they are there to help.

Inspired Adventures may send a team leader with the group to help ensure the smooth running of the adventure. They will act as an assistant to the Local Guide and help liaise with the team and provide support. You will be advised and introduced to your Inspired Adventures Team Leader if one will be accompanying your group.

On some adventures, the charity may elect to send a representative to complete the challenge with the group. They are not expected to act as a guide, rather they represent the charity and can answer any questions you might have about the work of the organisation. You will be advised and introduced to your Charity Representative if one will be accompanying your group.

Fitness and training

How do I train for this adventure?

We will provide you with basic information on how to prepare for your adventure when you register. We recommend that you consult your GP and a personal trainer to develop a training plan that will prepare you for the challenge.

It is sensible to start training as early as possible before you go on your trek. As part of your training, we recommend making use of your weekends to complete a full day hike and if possible, an overnight hike. You should aim to walk in hilly terrain for 6-8 hours and get up to do it again the following day comfortably. Conventional exercise routines which build strength, fitness and stamina, such as aerobics and light weight training can be beneficial, particularly if your fitness level is less than ideal.

Accommodation

What is the accommodation like?

We will be staying at the Green Cape Lightstation, within Beowa National Park. It consists of three beautifully restored cottages, each with a fully equipped kitchen, dining and lounge areas, and a veranda with ocean views. You will be sharing the bathroom with other occupants of the cabin.

Will I be sharing accommodation?

Accommodation on this adventure is based on twin-share. You will be paired with a teammate of the same gender and, whenever possible, age group. Single rooms are available at an additional cost and subject to availability.

I’m travelling with a friend, can we stay together?

If you’re travelling with a friend, please make note of this and we will pair you together.

What to expect

What is the food like?

Breakfast is a continental spread of cereals, stewed fruit, toast, spreads and yoghurt. Lunch can vary from day to day, but includes meat, salad, bread and wraps. There will also be plenty of snacks available during the day. Dinner is a casual two-course meal of main and dessert accompanied by pre-dinner nibbles, all prepared by your guides. The menu is constantly changing but can include a classic steak on the barbecue, chicken korma, or salmon fillet. Dessert can include maple baked apples, pears in red wine, fruit salad, or pavlova to name just a few.

I have dietary requirements, will I be catered for?

Of course, we will happily arrange for any dietary requirements you’ve noted during booking to be catered for. A special meal can always be prepared to meet individual needs specified in advance.

Will I have mobile phone reception?

Phone reception while trekking will be very patchy, but there is reliable reception at our accommodation.

You will be sent a comprehensive packing list after you register for the adventure with everything you need to consider.

What happens if there is a medical emergency?
