Trekking for a Brain Cancer Cure

on the Great Wall of China

In May 2025, a passionate team of nine fundraisers laced up their hiking boots and set off on an unforgettable adventure: trekking five days along the iconic Great Wall of China. United by a common purpose, to change the odds for people living with brain cancer, the team raised an incredible $57,000 for Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.

This once-in-a-lifetime experience combined cultural immersion, physical challenge, and the power of purpose, as each participant carried a deeply personal reason for taking part. From honouring loved ones lost to standing in solidarity with those still fighting, the journey was one of resilience, hope, and collective action.

A Note from Bec, The Inspired Adventures Team Leader

Trekking alongside this group on the Great Wall of China was a truly humbling and unforgettable experience.

Over the five days, we explored both restored and unrestored sections of the Wall - each with its own character, challenges, and beauty. Some paths were rugged and wild, while others offered glimpses into the incredible engineering and history of ancient China. We walked in the footsteps of dynasties past and soaked in the breath taking views that stretched for miles, often in awe at the sheer scale of the Wall. It’s hard to even comprehend that this wonder stretches more than 21,000 km.

Along the way, we immersed ourselves in Chinese history and culture, with our local guide bringing the stories of the Wall to life. We also had the joy of sampling an array of regional cuisines, each meal was different, and the food was simply amazing!

But what made this adventure truly special was the people. Each participant had a deeply personal connection to the cause, and the trek was an emotional journey for many. Stories were shared, some with tears, others with laughter, and bonds were formed quickly. Although most of the group hadn’t met before the trek, by the end of our journey, they felt like family. The strength, vulnerability, and passion they brought to the experience was inspiring beyond words.

I feel incredibly grateful to have been part of this life-changing adventure. It’s experiences like these that remind me why I do what I do, and how powerful a shared mission can be in bringing people together.

A Shared Mission: Why We Walk

Brain cancer is one of the deadliest cancers in Australia, with a five-year survival rate of just 22%. Cure Brain Cancer Foundation is leading the charge to improve outcomes, accelerate treatment options, and ultimately find a cure. Every step taken on the Great Wall was a step closer to that vision.

Collectively raising over $57,000, an average of $6,300 per person, the team far surpassed expectations. These funds will directly support Cure Brain Cancer Foundation’s (CBCF) mission, funding innovative research, clinical trials, and support for families affected by this devastating disease.

But the impact went far beyond dollars raised. This challenge gave participants the chance to connect deeply with the cause, become ambassadors for brain cancer awareness, and inspire others to take action. Many of the team members have continued their advocacy efforts since returning home, spreading awareness through their networks and continuing to fundraise.

Objectives

The 2025 Trek for a Cure at The Great Wall of China offered supporters a unique and meaningful way to connect with the organisation's mission while raising crucial funds.  This first trek highlighted the strong engagement and dedication within the CBCF Community, laying a solid foundation for future events.

Team engagement

One of the most rewarding aspects of the 2025 Trek for a Cure was the incredible sense of community that developed among the participants. The event united nine individuals who began the journey as strangers but finished as lifelong friends. This bond went far beyond the trail, fostering a shared commitment to CBCF’s mission and creating a passionate group of supporters eager to stay involved beyond the adventure. Since completing the trek, the group has remained closely connected through regular WhatsApp chats and even reunited for social catch-ups, highlighting the lasting impact of the experience.
