Over ten remarkable days, following the Aravali mountain range past tribal villages, fascinating templates, dense forest, sandy deserts and views of dramatic ruined forts.

If you’re lucky, you’ll spot deer, peacocks, antelope, even tigers in their natural, stunning habitat. Finally, no trip to India is complete without a visit to its most famous landmark, the majestic Taj Mahal. You’ll spend an early morning there watching the sunrise, slowly illuminating the iconic minarets – a great opportunity to reflect on all you’ve seen and experienced on this extraordinary Indian adventure.

Day 1: Arrive in Delhi

On arrival into Delhi, make your own way to your hotel. In the evening, we will meet for our first team dinner and briefing.

Day 2: Train Delhi to Kota, transfer to Bundi

After breakfast, we will transfer to Delhi railway station to board the Jan Shatabdi Express to Kota, about 7 hours through rural India. Upon arrival in Kota, we will drive the remainder of the way to Bundi where we will spend the night.

Day 3: Bundi to Indergarh

Today we begin our cycle! After breakfast we cycle through the local market and open fields, before we find ourselves at the foot of Aravali Hills. A gradual ascent takes us to a small range and through the valley, offering beautiful views of the hills. After lunch, we continue on to a local farm near Indergarh where we will camp for the evening. The farm offers amazing views of the Vijasan Mata Temple.

Day 4: Indergarh to Ranthambore National Park

We begin our cycle today with a short descent to Indergarh and then cycle through the fields of Millet along the dry river bed. Following this, we will reach a gradual ascent through fields, continuing on to Ranthambore National Park. This national park was once the private hunting reserve of the maharaja of Jaipur and is one of the best places to spot tigers, leopards, hyenas and sloth bears. Animals roam the scrub forests and low hills against a dramatic backdrop of ruined forts, temples and palaces. Graceful deer, antelopes and gazelle populate the undulating savannah, marsh crocodiles in the watercourses and over 200 species of birds. Today we finish our cycle just outside the park gate, where we will have lunch before embarking on a safari with a resident naturalist and spending the evening in the Tiger Home Guesthouse.

Day 5: Ranthambore National Park to Sapotra

After breakfast we set off for another ride through fields and local villages, before reaching the river Banas which we will cycle along. Expect difficult cycling for about 2km as this terrain is sandy and dry. Once we pass this, we will continue through open fields and dry river beds before reaching our camping place in Forest nursery, which is well shaded by ecliptic trees.

Day 6: Sapotra to Hindon

Today we will cycle through the dry hills, with cactus and dry river beds until we reach Kelan Devi Temple, known as the most powerful goddess temple in the area. We will continue to have great views of distant ruined forts and green fields until we reach our stop for the night at Hindon, in the gardens of Surot Places.

Day 7: Hindon to Bharatpur National Park

Our cycle today is through open fields, with distant views of the Aravali mountain range. Later in the day, we cycle through the dense ecliptic plantation, which will provide refreshing shade. We will cycle briefly along a highway until we reach our camping facility for the night at Vatika farms, where we will camp in the garden.

Day 8: Bharatpur to Agra

This morning we say goodbye to our camping crew who have taken great care of us over the last several days. We will board our transfer to Agra and transfer to the Sloth Bear Sanctuary for volunteering.. During your experience at the centre, you will receive an information session about how the centre works and learn about these beautiful animals.

Day 9: Agra to Delhi

Today we will take an early sunrise visit to the famed Taj Mahal. Following this, we will return to the hotel for breakfast and then transfer back to Delhi, where the remainder of the day will be free for you to explore. We will celebrate this amazing experience with a final team dinner.

About the adventure

How challenging is this adventure?

This adventure is ranked 3/5. While no extensive cycling experience is required prior to registering, our adventures are specifically designed for people who are relatively fit and willing to train. 

The Raj to Taj cycle is a physical challenge, and the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the experience. You will be well supported on the adventure by the expert guides and the wider team. You can move at your own pace and we take frequent rest breaks. We will also be accompanied by a support vehicle, where you can take a rest.

Can I join an Inspired Adventure on my own?

Of course, most people do! Throughout your adventure journey, we will connect you with your fellow adventurers so you can get to know each other before you hit the road.

Who will I be travelling with? 

Our average group size at Inspired Adventures ranges from 10 to 20 people. You can be sure that you have all come together with the shared purpose of making a difference to others and having the adventure of a lifetime.

The group will be led by a local tour guide with expert knowledge of the region. Many groups will also be accompanied by an Inspired Adventures team leader or doctor to support and motivate the team. Where applicable, a charity representative may also join the team. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your chosen charity and their work.

What is the general age range of participants?

The minimum age for this adventure is 18, however younger ages are considered on application. We have had participants aged 16–80+ take part in our challenges, all united by their sense of philanthropy and adventure.

Fitness and training

How do I train for this adventure?

We will provide you with basic information on how to prepare for your adventure when you register. We recommend that you consult your GP and a personal trainer to develop a training plan that will prepare you for the challenge.

It is sensible to start training as early as possible before you go on your cycle. As part of your training, we recommend making use of your weekends to complete a full day hike and if possible, an overnight hike. You should aim to cycle in hilly terrain for 6-8 hours and get up to do it again the following day comfortably. Conventional exercise routines which build strength, fitness and stamina, such as aerobics and light weight training can be beneficial, particularly if your fitness level is less than ideal.

Will there be regular breaks on cycling days? 

There will be the opportunity to stop regularly – every hour or so – to rest, fill up your water and have a few snacks. The rests are not too long though – the longer you rest, the harder it is to get back on the bike!

Is there a support vehicle if I can’t complete the day? 

There will be a support vehicle travelling behind the group, or nearby, at all times. So if you need a rest or just can’t go on – please don’t worry! You can jump on at any time. It’s nothing to be ashamed of if you need a break – that’s what it’s for.

Accommodation

What is the accommodation like?

Accommodation on this adventure is twin-share 3-4 star hotels, and comfortable camping. Each tent will contain a mattress and inflatable pillows. There will be a dining tent for meals. Most hotels in India will have modern amenities with toilet paper provided and other usual western amenities.

Will I be sharing accommodation?

Accommodation on this adventure is based on twin-share. You will be paired with a teammate of the same gender and, whenever possible, age group. Single rooms are available at an additional cost and subject to availability.

What to expect

What are the toilets like? 

Most hotels will have western toilets. Whilst camping, the toilets are long drop.

Are showers available? 

Showers are available at all hotels, and washing tents will be available whilst camping.

What is the food like? 

The traditional food of India is renowned worldwide for its combination of tantalising herbs and spices and diversity of dishes. The cooking style fluctuates from region to region and is predominantly divided into South Indian and Northern Indian cuisine. South Indian food is celebrated for its hot and spicy dishes, while Northern Indian food has gained a following for its Tandoori and Korma dishes. In western regions, you will find that coconut and seafood are commonly used in dishes, and in Central India, you’ll be spoiled with an all-round blend of Indian cooking styles. Do not launch straight into hot curry, as it may be spicier than you think! 

Popular Dishes 

Naan Bread: A leavened, oven-baked flatbread that is normally served hot with most dishes.

Samosas: a deep-fried or baked savoury pastry filled with everything from spiced potatoes, peas and lentils to ground lamb, beef or chicken.

Alu Gobi: a savoury dish made with potatoes, cauliflower, Indian spices such as turmeric and garam masala. A hearty hit of ginger, garlic and onion are also common ingredients used.

Matar Paneer: A popular vegetarian dish consisting of peas and farmer’s cheese in a tomato-based sauce and garam masala spices.

Gulab Jamun: A popular Indian dessert made with khoya, fried until golden and dipped in saffron-induced sugar syrup.

Sandeesh: A super sweet yet mouth-watering dessert made with cottage cheese, cardamom and saffron.

Of course, we will happily arrange for any dietary requirements you’ve noted during booking to be catered for. A special meal can always be prepared to meet individual needs specified in advance.

Will I have mobile phone reception? 

If you have worldwide coverage, you can bring your own mobile phone and use it to make domestic or international calls. Please check with your mobile service provider prior to departure regarding international roaming and associated costs. Alternatively, you may wish to purchase a local SIM card with data. Please ensure your phone is unlocked prior to departure. Your local guide can assist with setting up the local SIM card. NOTE: Local prepaid SIMs can sometimes take 24-48 hours for activation. You will need your passport and a passport photograph to purchase a SIM card.

Wi-Fi access is widely available at most restaurants, cafes and hotels. Wi-Fi is normally free, however some places do charge.

Will I have access to electricity?

You will have access to electricity at hotels, but not while camping. India uses 220V/50Hz and plugs that have two round pins.

What do I need to pack? 

You will be sent a comprehensive packing list after you register for the adventure with everything you need to consider.

What happens if there is a medical emergency?

Providing the safest possible environment is our highest priority and we have an outstanding safety record.

Why do I need to pay a registration fee? 

When you register, you will be required to pay a registration fee to secure your spot on the team. From the minute you register until you return from your adventure, the team at Inspired Adventures will provide you with everything you need - including a personalised fundraising plan, fitness advice and support with travel preparations. You will receive access to your online adventure portal complete with your own online fundraising page and lots of resources to help you along the way. Your registration fee goes towards our cost of managing the adventure and supporting you on your journey.

How much spending money do I need?

We recommend that you allow approximately 1,780 Rupee per day ($35 AUD) to cover any snacks not included in the trip costs, tips, souvenirs and gifts, and any additional activities you may wish to participate in. It is possible to travel comfortably on a smaller budget.

Is it customary to tip? 

Tipping your local guide is customary, but not compulsory, and you are encouraged to tip only an amount you find appropriate. The recommended tipping amount for this adventure is Rs14,000 (approximately $280 AUD) to be given in the local currency. This includes tips for your guides, drivers, cycle mechanic and airport transfers. Tipping 5-10% in restaurants and taxis is customary.

Do I need to have travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory for international adventures to cover cancellation, hospital, emergency evacuation and lost luggage. We recommend purchasing your policy as soon as possible. It is up to you to ensure you have fully comprehensive travel insurance and you will need to share these details with our team before departure. Do I need a visa to travel to India?

Australian and New Zealand passport holders require a visa for entry into India. For the most current requirements, refer to the Smartraveller website.

About India

Is it safe to travel to India?

While in India, we advise that you remain aware of your surroundings at all times. Never leave your belongings unattended, always keep an eye or a firm grip on cameras and shoulder bags, and avoid travelling alone, especially at night. Caution should be adopted in larger cities. When staying in hotels, secure all valuables and documents in a safe. 

What weather can I expect?

Rajasthan has a hot, semi-arid climate. In the hottest months, it can regularly get above 40૦ C. In the cooler months, the temperatures get up to 30૦ C, dropping to around 15-20૦ C in the evenings.

Please check local forecasts in the weeks leading up to your adventure for up-to-date weather information as the seasons can be unpredictable and highly variable week to week. 

Can I drink the water in India?

We strongly advise that you do not drink the tap water, as it is only safe to drink after being boiled.

Are credit cards widely accepted in India?

ATMs are widely available throughout India, with the exception of remote or rural communities. However, they usually offer a poorer exchange rate and transactions will usually incur a small fee.

When you register, you will be required to pay a registration fee to secure your spot on the team. From the minute you register until you return from your adventure, the team at Inspired Adventures will provide you with everything you need - including a personalised fundraising plan, fitness advice and support with travel preparations. You will receive access to your online adventure portal complete with your own online fundraising page and lots of resources to help you along the way. Your registration fee goes towards our cost of managing the adventure and supporting you on your journey.

How much spending money do I need?

We recommend that you allow approximately 1,780 Rupee per day ($35 AUD) to cover any snacks not included in the trip costs, tips, souvenirs and gifts, and any additional activities you may wish to participate in. It is possible to travel comfortably on a smaller budget.

Is it customary to tip? 

Tipping your local guide is customary, but not compulsory, and you are encouraged to tip only an amount you find appropriate. The recommended tipping amount for this adventure is Rs14,000 (approximately $280 AUD) to be given in the local currency. This includes tips for your guides, drivers, cycle mechanic and airport transfers. Tipping 5-10% in restaurants and taxis is customary. 

Travel insurance and visas

Do I need to have travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory for international adventures to cover cancellation, hospital, emergency evacuation and lost luggage. We recommend purchasing your policy as soon as possible. It is up to you to ensure you have fully comprehensive travel insurance and you will need to share these details with our team before departure. Do I need a visa to travel to India?

Australian and New Zealand passport holders require a visa for entry into India. For the most current requirements, refer to the Smartraveller website.

Is it safe to travel to India?

While in India, we advise that you remain aware of your surroundings at all times. Never leave your belongings unattended, always keep an eye or a firm grip on cameras and shoulder bags, and avoid travelling alone, especially at night. Caution should be adopted in larger cities. When staying in hotels, secure all valuables and documents in a safe. 

What weather can I expect?

Rajasthan has a hot, semi-arid climate. In the hottest months, it can regularly get above 40૦ C. In the cooler months, the temperatures get up to 30૦ C, dropping to around 15-20૦ C in the evenings.

Please check local forecasts in the weeks leading up to your adventure for up-to-date weather information as the seasons can be unpredictable and highly variable week to week. 

Can I drink the water in India?

We strongly advise that you do not drink the tap water, as it is only safe to drink after being boiled.

Are credit cards widely accepted in India?

ATMs are widely available throughout India, with the exception of remote or rural communities. However, they usually offer a poorer exchange rate and transactions will usually incur a small fee.
