Hiking Kangaroo Island

The island lies off the mainland of South Australia, home to an array of native flora and wildlife, unparalleled seascapes and picturesque trails.

The recent bushfire season left the island in a state of devastation, closed to visitors for a period of time. But now as the community rebuilds and the landscape regenerates, parts of the island have reopened and await visitors.

On this adventure, you will spend 5 days exploring some of the most scenic spots on the island. Following trails including the Ironstone Hill Hike and Timber Creek Walks, you’ll be rewarded by sensational views. As you pass sculpted cliffs keep an eye out for sea lions, birdlife in the tea tree wetlands, and learn about the history of South Australia’s oldest lighthouse. At the end of each exciting day, wind down by enjoying the hospitality of the local towns and settlements, with a hearty meal and opportunity to sample the island’s fine wines.

Trip notes

Day 1: Depart Adelaide for Kangaroo Island

Make your own way to Adelaide, where we’ll be meeting the rest of the team and our guide for a morning departure.. Our adventure begins with a 2 hour drive to Cape Jervis, where we’ll board the scenic ferry before arriving at Kangaroo Island, ready to tackle our adventure. The rest of the day will be spent settling into our surroundings, and we may do some short walks to get us warmed up for the days ahead.

Trekking Distance: 2-6km

Meals: Lunch

Day 2: Rocky River to Snake Lagoon

For our first full day of trekking, we’ll be making our way from Rocky River to Snake Lagoon. Today’s hike takes us through eucalypt woodland, surrounded by the calls of local bird species. Upon reaching the Pardalote Lookout, we stop to take in views of the meandering Rocky River below, before we continue down from the ridge. As the day comes to a close, we’ll pass the spectacular Rocky River Cascades, and finally arrive at the tall sugar gums that mark Snake Lagoon. We return to our accommodation tonight and reminisce on all that we have accomplished so far over dinner.

Trekking Distance: 12km

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Snake Lagoon to Remarkable Rocks

Today, we return to Snake Lagoon to follow another trail; this one to the iconic Remarkable Rocks. We begin along the coast and are soon rewarded with our first views of the mighty Southern Ocean. As we continue along the coastline, you may spot birds of prey and bottle-nosed dolphins when they surface to hunt for fish. We continue on the coastline until we reach Maupertuis Bay and Cape du Couedic Lighthouse, sitting atop the headland and then continue on to Remarkable Rocks, a geological formation, where we finish for the day.

Trekking Distance: 21km

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Remarkable Rocks to Hanson Bay

Be prepared for more stunning sights, as today’s trek offers coastal views for the majority of the day, including fascinating rock formations. We then cut inland through lush eucalypts, and make our way to the Hanson Bay headland and small settlement. You may wish to dip your toes in the crystal blue waters to celebrate a day well done, before we return to our accommodation for our final evening together, celebrating all that we have accomplished.

Trekking Distance: 18km

Day 5: Hanson Bay, Kelly Hill Caves & Return to Adelaide

Our final day of walking is shorter but no less spectacular than the previous days. Beginning at Hanson Bay, our trail winds through cave systems, woodlands and freshwater lakes before we arrive at Kelly Hill Caves. It is finally time to bid farewell to Kangaroo Island and the magical time we have all shared here. Once we board the ferry,  the island becomes increasingly tiny on the horizon, and we return to Adelaide filled with memories to last a lifetime. We will arrive back in Adelaide in the late afternoon, and ask that you not book your flight home until after 7:30pm.

Fitness and training

How do I train for this adventure?

We will provide you with basic information on how to prepare for your adventure when you register. We recommend that you consult your GP and a personal trainer to develop a training plan that will prepare you for the challenge.

It is sensible to start training as early as possible before you go on your trek. As part of your training, we recommend making use of your weekends to complete a full day hike and if possible, an overnight hike. You should aim to walk in hilly terrain for 4-5 hours and get up to do it again the following day comfortably. Conventional exercise routines which build strength, fitness and stamina, such as aerobics and light weight training can be beneficial, particularly if your fitness level is less than ideal.
