Everyone deserves access to excellent eye care. Yet too many people experience vision impairment or blindness because they didn’t have access to the care that would potentially save their sight.

But you can help change this.

Join the ANZEF Cape to Cape Trek 2023 and discover the rugged and beautiful West Australian coast in pursuit of addressing the imbalance in eye health equity, access, and education.

Traversing the south-west corner of Western Australia, 250 kilometres south of Perth, the Cape to Cape Track stretches the length of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.

From Perth to Cape Mentelle, across the Margaret River and through Boranup Forest, this adventure is a true feast for the senses. You’ll witness incredible views of the Indian Ocean, marvel at some of the world’s oldest hardwoods and enjoy the company of like-minded RANZCO members committed to a more sustainable, equitable system of eye care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Māori, and Pasifika Peoples, and communities across the Asia-Pacific that are unable to access specialist eye care.

Everyone deserves access to the best level of eye care, regardless of where they live, or their cultural or socio-economic background.

ANZEF is working tirelessly to deliver better eye health outcomes across Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region. But we need your help.

As part of the ANZEF Cape to Cape Trek 2023, you’ll raise vital funds to support life-changing projects that improve eye health and access to culturally safe eye care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Māori, and Pasifika Peoples, as well as for rural and regional communities.

With every step you take along the rugged West Australian coast, you’ll enable ANZEF to partner with local ophthalmologists, researchers, educators, and other health professionals and ensure projects operate for as long as required.

From registration to destination, your fundraising and physical effort will promote recognition and awareness of eye health issues and help prevent avoidable blindness for those most at risk. You’ll also empower ANZEF to grow and support the First Nations eye health workforce in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, to address the cultural, social and economic barriers to eye health care and promote improved understanding through education and advocacy.

Day 1: Tuesday, 24 October 2023

Meet in Perth

Welcome to Western Australia! Following the close of RANZCO Perth Congress the previous afternoon, you’ll make your way to our Perth centre to meet our local guides at around midday. From here, we travel south west towards Gnarabup Bay. After checking into our hotel, we set off on a sunset stroll to the local lookout before enjoying our first team dinner together.

Day 2: Wednesday, 25 October 2023

Moses Rock – Gracetown

This morning we set off on our first trek. We enjoy spectacular views as the track rises high over several large limestone headlands before flattening out on Wilyabrup Beach. We then ascend a staircase up onto the stunning Wilyabrup Cliffs. After ample time to take in the ocean vistas, we trek back down towards the beach, passing the famous surfing breaks of Gallows and Guillotines. Our track then becomes rocky as it weaves over picturesque granite boulders and finally into the pretty hamlet of Gracetown.

Day 3: Thursday, 26 October 2023

Ellensbrook – Prevelly

Today’s trek begins at the Ellensbrook Homestead, a beautiful heritage-listed home surrounded by national park. The Cape to Cape Track leads us to an awesome grotto and the delightful Meekadarabee Falls, then onto Ellensbrook campsite. From here, we ascend a steep hill to an undulating dirt track that then takes us through scrubland with a series of switchbacks. Arriving at Joey’s Nose, we walk the beautiful Kilcarnup Beach and sand dunes to Cape Mentelle and Horseshoe Bay, before crossing the Margaret River Mouth. It’s then just a further two kilometre trek to our hotel for rest and a delicious team dinner.

Day 4: Friday, 27 October 2023

Redgate Beach – Boranup Forest

This morning, we transfer to the historic Redgate Beach – a surfing and fishing favourite – for our trek to Boranup Forest. Following one of the best sections of the Cape to Cape Track, we enjoy the scenic coastal views from Bob’s Hollow and Contos. We then enter the majestic karri forest, home to the world’s third tallest hardwood! The solid track underfoot and afternoon shade makes today’s trek the perfect way to end our West Australian adventure. After lunch, we transfer back to Perth for our flight home or onto new adventures.

You'll be supporting Carbon Neutral as they replant native plant species to create a green corridor for native wildlife, assisting in the recovery of entire ecosystems. How challenging is this adventure?

This adventure is ranked 3/5. While no extensive trekking experience is required prior to registering, our adventures are specifically designed for people who are relatively fit and willing to train. The Cape to Cape trek is a physical challenge, and the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the experience.

Much of the trekking will be on soft sand, but other sections will be on rocky headlands.

You will be well supported on the adventure, with the guides and your team all cheering you on. You are free to move at your own pace and we will take frequent breaks.

How do I fundraise?

Never fundraised before? Not sure where to start? No worries, we don’t expect you to do it alone. You will have regular support from the Inspired Adventures fundraising team, who will help you make a fundraising plan to meet your target. Alongside personalised coaching, we will also send you lots of ideas and resources on how to fundraise. From online fundraising to trivia nights, to bake sales and out-of-the-box ideas, we have years and years of tried and tested tips to make your fundraising a success.

Who will I be travelling with?

We believe small group travel is better for the planet, and better for you. Our adventures usually have 10 – 20 people aged from 18 to 90+ (younger ages considered on request). You can be sure that you have all come together with the shared purpose of making a difference to others and having the adventure of a lifetime.

The group will be led by a local tour guide with expert knowledge of the region. Many groups will also be accompanied by an Inspired Adventures team leader or doctor to support and motivate the team.

Where applicable, a charity representative may also join the team. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your chosen charity and their work.

How do I train for this adventure?

We will provide you with information on how to prepare for your adventure when you register. In addition, we recommend that you consult your GP and a personal trainer to develop a training plan that will prepare you for the challenge.

As part of your training, we recommend making use of your free time to complete full-day hikes and ideally a hike over several days. You should aim to be able to walk for 6–8 hours and get up to do it again the following day comfortably.

It is sensible to start training as early as possible before you go on your trek.

Do I need to have insurance?

Travel insurance is highly recommended for domestic adventures – to cover cancellation, hospital, emergency evacuation and lost luggage. We recommend purchasing your policy as soon as possible. It is up to you to ensure you have fully comprehensive travel insurance and you'll need to share these details with our team before departure. How will you manage the risk of COVID-19?

We have prepared a detailed COVID-19 Safety Management Plan to account for the wide variety of scenarios that may impact your departure. In the instance that the adventure is unable to proceed due to COVID-19, alternative departure arrangements will be provided where possible.

Inspired Adventures requires that all travellers are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as described in government guidelines and ground operator requirements.

How much does it cost to participate in this adventure?

The total cost to participate in this adventure is: $1,950

In addition, you are also committing to raising $3,000 (per person) for ANZEF.

In order to secure your place, you will need to pay half of your travel deposit ($475) upfront, and the second half four weeks after registration. This is non-refundable.

A second instalment of your balance is due 6 months prior to departure, and the final balance is due 3 months before travel. If you are registering with less than 7 months to departure, you will most likely be invoiced in fewer instalments based on the date of registration.

Your travel payments are invoiced in instalments to provide ample time to pay your balance. We can build a personalised payment plan that suits your schedule if our standard timeline does not suit.
