Cradle Mountain, Tasmania
24 - 27 October 2022
“The most humbling and emotional time of my life with a group of people who share a common bond and believe in the future.”
— Trevor Neil King, Trek4BrainCancer Larapinta 2019
About this challenge
Each year about 1,700 Australians are diagnosed with brain cancer, but there’s a survival rate of just 22 per cent. The Cure Brain Cancer Foundation believes that’s just not good enough and has set itself a mission to raise that rate to at least 50 percent in 10 years. But what that takes is funds: for research, of course, but also for programs that improve the outcomes for those diagnosed with the disease.
When you trek Cradle Mountain, part of the Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness Area, for Trek4BrainCancer Tassie 2022 you’ll be exploring a region where ancient pines fringe glacial lakes and the landscape transforms from temperate rainforest to alpine heath. Chances are you’ll spot quolls and echidnas, maybe even a Tasmanian devil, as you hike.
And while you’re conquering mountain peaks on an adventure you’ll never forget, you’ll also be raising vital funds for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation as it supports world-class brain cancer research and invests in projects to help people living with brain cancer.
How you'll make a difference
When you take on this Cradle Mountain challenge you’ll help us invest in research and treatments that will truly make a difference for people living with brain cancer, now and in the future. We fund world-class brain cancer research, and recently have provided financial support to projects that help kids with the disease. Our Innovation Programs are tailored to identify new drugs and better understand the biology of tumours in order to save lives and improve quality of life for people suffering from brain cancer.
The funds you raise will go directly towards this research, much of which includes pivotal brain cancer trials that will save lives. By taking on this challenge and fundraising for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, you’re helping to rapidly increase brain cancer survival and improve quality of life for people impacted by the disease.
Itinerary
Launceston to Cradle Mountain National Park
Are you ready for an adventure of a lifetime? We’ve got an early 9am start this morning, so it’s recommended you arrive in Launceston the day before to ensure you’re on time for our CBD departure. After you meet your guide and the rest of the team, it’s time to hit the road for the scenic drive to Sheffield. This quirky little town is known for its painted murals, which you’ll have some time to admire while we stop and pick up some lunch. From here, we carry on to the spectacular Cradle Mountain National Park. After settling into our accommodation, we set out to discover the beauty of the park on foot. Today’s trek is a 6km circuit, starting from the beautiful Dove Lake, located at the foot of Cradle Mountain. The track meanders along the base of the mountain, through rainforest, passing the King Billy pine forest and the roaring Pencil Falls. Along the way, keep an eye out for Tasmania’s unique plant and animal life. Dinner tonight is at your own leisure and expense, so take the opportunity to check out the local restaurants. This evening, after the sun has gone down, we’ll head out into the night for a guided wildlife spotting tour, where your expert local guide will help to find fascinating nocturnal creatures, like wombats, pademelons, wallabies, quolls and, of course, Tasmanian devils.

Lake Lilla Track or Twisted Lakes and Lake Rodway
Lace up your boots for another day of hiking through the awe-inspiring landscapes of Cradle Mountain National Park. Depending on weather conditions, there are two hikes available today and your guide will help determine which is best suited. The Lake Lilla track begins at Ronny Creek, a popular spot for wombats to hang out, and detours to the picturesque Wombat Pool and dramatic Crater Lake. If you’re feeling really active, you’ll also have the chance to climb up to Marions Lookout for one of the best views in the park. Your second option is an amazing trek to the Twisted Lakes and Lake Rodway, passing through ever-changing scenery – you’re going to want to have your camera out for this one. Whichever trek you take, you’ll stop for a picnic lunch in a scenic spot and enjoy some time to take in your wild surroundings. After your trek, we return to our accommodation via shuttle bus and rest up for an exciting day tomorrow.

Montezuma Falls Walk
This morning we head to the delightful little town of Rosebery and set out on a walk to the incredible Montezuma Falls. We begin by following the path of a former tramway through lush rainforest before arriving at the base of the falls and a suspension bridge strung across the forest below. Named after the Aztec emperor, you’ll soon see that this impressive waterfall lives up to its moniker. For lunch today, we stop at a local cafe or pub to recharge, and experience more of Tasmania’s excellent food scene. The afternoon is yours at leisure. As the sun begins to set, we head out to meet Tasmania’s most emblematic animal, the Tasmanian devil, when we pay a visit to a wildlife conservation facility aimed at protecting these endangered creatures. Here, you’ll watch how they feed, learn their story, visit the nursery and meet some of the facility’s youngest residents. The evening finishes with drinks around the campfire as the sun sets over Cradle Mountain, the unmistakable sound of the devils in the distance.
