Trip notes

Day 1: Adelaide to Mount Remarkable National Park

Welcome to your Flinders Ranges adventure! We have an early start today, meeting in the Adelaide CBD at 8:00am, where we will meet our fellow adventurers and guide. From here, we drive the 3 hours to Mount Remarkable National Park, renowned for its rugged mountain ranges and iconic exposed red quartzite. For our introduction to this region, we’ll be tackling the Daveys Gully Hike, a fairly short loop offering breathtaking views into the Alligator Basin and across Spencer Gulf. This afternoon, we make our way to our accommodation and enjoy our first team dinner together.

Transfer Time: 3 hours

Trekking Distance: 2.4km (1 hour)

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Black Gap to Ikara (Wilpena Pound)

Our first full day of trekking is a spectacular one, as we make our way from Black Gap to Wilpena, via the famed Heysen Trail. The day contains a steep ascent from the southern slopes of Wilpena Pound and making our way across the valley floor. Here, we’ll experience a surprising amount of vegetation, including giant eucalypts. In fact, the entire area is a haven for emus, kangaroos, and several species of native birds. Wilpena Pound is a marvel, and we’ll be returning tomorrow for some further exploration.

Trekking Distance: 12km

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Ikara

What better way to start the day than with a hike through the stunning landscapes of Wilpena Pound (Ikara), the breathtaking natural amphitheatre that is the centrepiece of Flinders Ranges National Park. Kicking off from the historic Aroona Homestead, we follow a well carved trail through the landscapes that inspired the iconic paintings of South Australian artist Hans Heysen. Passing by dry creek beds and walking through a dramatic valley, today is a day you won’t soon forget. In the afternoon, we set out by bus to explore the ancient Brachina Gorge, known for the Brachina Gorge Geological Trail. Here, we’ll unearth millions of years of geological history as we explore the gorge and its surrounds. Be sure to keep an eye out for the stripy tails yellow footed rock wallabies as you go!

Trekking Distance: 8km

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Mt Ohlssen Bagge

Today will be spent tackling Mt Ohlssen Bagge, one of the most celebrated walks in the Flinders Ranges. This return hike has some steep and challenging sections, so prepare for rocky terrain and a continuous uphill climb. Before long, you’ll see that your efforts were worth it, as while the whole walk offers up unforgettable views, the view from the top simply can’t be beat.

Afterwards, we will join an Aboriginal Guide on an informative stroll to Old Wilpena Station, one of Australia’s oldest and best preserved pastoral settlements. On this walk, our guide will share ancient stories of the landscape that have been passed down from generation to generation, while providing insight into the biodiversity of the region and the life it sustains. The guide will also educate us on the relationship between the land and the Adnyamathanha people as the site holds deep rooted cultural significance.

Trekking Distance: TBC

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Flinders Ranges - Clare Valley - Adelaide

It is time to leave the magnificent scenes of Wilpena Pound behind and begin our journey back to Adelaide. Aside from its fantastic walking trails, South Australia is also renowned for its wine. We make a stop in the famous Clare Valley wine region, taking some time to stop for lunch and a visit to a local winery. Here you’ll have the chance to taste some of the wonderful wine, explore the vineyard on foot, or just sit back and enjoy the peaceful setting. While here, your guide will fill you in on the fascinating history of producing wine in this part of the country. After a wonderful final afternoon together, we continue on to Adelaide. You can expect to arrive at around 4.30pm, at which point your adventure will come to an end.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
