The Trekking Experience
Over one day, you’ll navigate a mix of alpine ridgelines, rocky terrain, and scenic trails. The trekking day typically ranges from 6–9 hours, and while no prior long-distance trekking experience is required, a reasonable level of fitness and preparation is essential.
The Three Peaks Challenge is physically demanding, but every step rewards you with breath-taking mountain views, fresh alpine air, and a deep sense of accomplishment. You’ll rely on teamwork, determination, and careful pacing to reach the summit of each peak, making this adventure both challenging and deeply rewarding.
Accommodation
Accommodation during the challenge is in comfortable ski lodges, with rooms allocated on a twin-share or multi-share basis, depending on the lodge and group size. You can expect all the usual amenities, providing a warm and relaxing space to recover after each day on the trail.
Bathroom facilities may be shared, depending on the lodge, and all towels and linen are provided. This ensures you can focus on the adventure itself, rather than the logistics.
Weather
The Snowy Mountains are known for their unpredictable alpine climate. Even in summer, expect cool mornings, strong winds on exposed ridges, and occasional rain or sudden temperature changes.
Layering is key - you’ll need clothing suitable for warm daytime conditions, cool alpine winds, and the potential for rain. Being prepared for changing conditions ensures a comfortable and safe trek.
Terrain
The terrain is varied and challenging, including:
- Well-formed walking tracks
- Rocky ascents and uneven alpine paths
- Exposed ridgelines and sections of loose stone
Trekking poles are highly recommended to support your knees and reduce fatigue during long ascents and descents. The trails are rewarding, offering spectacular alpine scenery and a true sense of adventure.
Training Tips
Proper preparation is key to enjoying the Three Peaks Challenge. We’ll provide basic training guidance when you register, but we recommend consulting your GP or a personal trainer to tailor a training plan to your needs.
Here’s how to prepare:
- Start early: Begin training months in advance to build endurance.
- Practice long hikes: Do full-day walks on hilly or uneven terrain, aiming for 6–8 hours to simulate trekking conditions.
- Build strength and stamina: Include aerobic activities (walking, cycling, swimming) and light strength training to improve overall fitness.
- Consistency matters: Regular training and gradual progression are far more effective than last-minute preparation.
Training improves not just your fitness, but also your confidence, enjoyment, and safety on the trek.
