In June 2025, a passionate group of supporters laced up their boots and set off on a powerful journey through the heart of Central Australia. Led by Inspired Adventures Campaign Manager Angela, the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) Larapinta Trail trek brought together 13 dedicated participants, all united by a common purpose: to help create a future free from ovarian cancer. Together, they also raised a staggering $81,483 in support of life-saving ovarian cancer research.
Stretching over 223 kilometres, the Larapinta Trail weaves through the rugged ridgelines of the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering red rock gorges, ancient desert landscapes, and unforgettable sunrises. For many, it’s a bucket-list trek. For OCRF and this team of fundraisers, it became a journey of resilience, remembrance, and hope. The group took on a 6-day challenge, culminating in a summit of Mount Sonder, one of the highest peaks in the Northern Territory. The mountain, said to resemble a pregnant woman lying on her back, became a powerful symbol for the team. As one participant shared, “We trekked to her ovaries” - a poetic reflection of their mission to fund vital ovarian cancer research.
A note from Angela, Inspired Adventures Team Leader and Campaign Manager. "I had the privilege of leading this incredible group of OCRF supporters along the Larapinta Trail, walking in memory of loved ones and in support of a vital cause. The group’s camaraderie and mutual support were truly inspiring - we lifted each other through every challenge and shared unforgettable moments, including watching the sunrise from the summit of Mt Sonder. Surrounded by the striking red beauty of the gorges and under perfect skies, it was a deeply moving and memorable journey that I’ll never forget."
The Mission Behind the Miles
At the heart of the campaign OCRF’s objective was to raise critical funds to support world-leading ovarian cancer research, an area that remains significantly underfunded despite its urgent need. Beyond fundraising, the trek served as a powerful platform to reach and engage both new and existing supporters, offering them a meaningful way to contribute to the cause while taking on a life-changing personal challenge. Another key focus was to foster deep, authentic connections among participants, creating a sense of shared purpose and community that extended far beyond the trek itself. Importantly, the trek was designed not as a one-off event, but as the foundation for a long-term, sustainable annual fundraising campaign.
Launched in August 2024 to OCRF’s loyal multi-event audience, the campaign was strategically timed to build interest and momentum before being opened to the wider public in November. Early traction was strong, with the first participant signing up in September. OCRF leveraged key calendar moments, including Black Friday and New Year sales periods, to drive visibility and registrations through targeted promotional bursts.
Fundraising That Went Above and Beyond
Each trekker committed to raising at least $3,500, but the team far surpassed expectations, raising over $80,000 collectively, with some individual stories standing out.
Chelsea, initially nervous about reaching her goal, ultimately raised over $14,000, with the help of her mum and a powerful fundraising event that made up the bulk of her total. Her experience highlights the passion and creativity OCRF fundraisers bring to every campaign.
After experiencing ovarian cancer herself and losing her close friend to the same disease last year, Chelsea threw herself into the challenge completely with passion and purpose behind her. She launched an online campaign with a very catchy name - Chels’ Chumour Chrek - and began sharing regular updates, including a video-a-day throughout Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and by undertaking a “Trek a Day in May” to train for her adventure, raise awareness and inspire advocacy.
Moments That Mattered
While the trek offered no shortage of jaw-dropping views, Day 4 held something deeper. Sitting by a quiet waterhole, the team began sharing personal stories, loved ones they’d lost, survivors they admired, reasons they’d chosen to take on this challenge. The moment became a profound reflection of the campaign’s heart.
Participants also wore custom OCRF t-shirts with personal tributes written on the back:
- “Steps for Mum”
- “Climb for a Cure”
- “In Honour of My Amazing Mum”
- “She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain”
These words became beacons of meaning as the group journeyed through the red dust of the Outback together.
